artic 595
I headed out last night with one dog and lamp. Those who know, I do like to have both, but one is near the end of his injury. As I was driving to my destination I was in two minds to turn around and head back home. Forecast stated plenty of cloud cover, and no frost however as I got nearer to the estate in woburn it wasn't to be. I parked by the gates and had a nice warm cup of mushroom soup which I had made earlier in the day. I could hear my dog whining with excitement in the rear of the truck. Not sure lad this will be a good night I say to myself. I strap the lamp around my waist, pick up my piece of twine. As open the rear of the truck my dog is eager to please, lowering his head for me to put the twine around his neck, tail whipping to and fro against the windows of the truck. Over the gate we go, and crunch, crunch, crunch, the ground is slighty crispy. All of sudden I hear a rustle and a gallop, I flick the switch to just capture a sika buck jumping over a 6ft hedge and into the woods. Superb! Ths is what it's all about, just being out there, seeing things that most will only see on tv or read in books. Stealth was the name of the game. The first field was a total blank, I was working along side the wood and out, although there was plenty of movement inside the wood. Through the next gate and into the next field, here sat 5/6 rabbits well away from cover. So very slowly I positioned myself, and chose our first target. The rabbit's ears raised, and began to hop, the dog registered this and was gently slipped, up he goes and cuts in and takes his first. I never get bored from seeing any lurcher lamping. From the same point I flick the switch and find our next rabbit. It was about 50yrds or so and began to run towards home, I could feel my dogs heart beat pounding on my leg, shivering with excitement, off the dog goes, a couple of quick turns and it's taken off the ground. The next few fields resulted in some great catches, turning/twisting and neck breaking speeds. The slips were longer than usual, but in these conditions there was no choice. The rabbits were constantly on the move. It was hard work, the dog worked really well. On a couple of retrieves, deer would bolt near by, and a couple of times whilst chasing his chosen rabbit a deer would lift and bolt, but he remained focused in his task. . I could of gone on into the early hours of the morning, but I had enough in the bag, I was pleased with my dogs performance, and for mine! Back to the truck, I checked my dog over, (he did take some bumps here and there) dried him off and had some more soup. I leaned on the bonnet of the truck and listened, what a different world it is after dark. How peaceful it is, your worries just disappear, the echo of deer barking from a distance, feeling like your being watched by the wildlife. I just enjoy those nights out in the fields, because come daylight it's all noise, fumes and GO GO GO! I start the truck and drive away to return another night. There is a photo taken I will upload later. 5 Quote Link to post
