I voted brains, i already have a dog that will kill itself to catch quarry. She spends so much time laid up that i have just bought a puppy to take over next season so i actually get to go out whenever i want rather than whenever shes not banged up.

just your opions lads and lasses want you want in your dogs ,do you want run trough brick walls and fences for its game or would rather use its brains and not take all the hits and knocks ,some people

So the dog ran 200yds leaving blood prints and that impressed you, well fair play to the dog pity about the sheer ignorance of the owner, don,t worry though you will have plenty of admirers on here.

100% agree [preban]

prey drive every time for me i know we are all differant buti want them to run when i want not when they think its ok to. ive had both types and my preferance gets more injuries.. but over the years and its been many years i have always favoured and preferred the get it at all cost type.becuse i have found that when the going gets tough they keep going .

I expect my dog during the day after hare and fox to go though or over most things in there capability but on the lamp is different story where dog is more likely to get hurt then during the day.

Dont like dog that smash into things on the lamp what is the point off getting £300 vet bill just for a rabbit you dogs misses rabbit that ok there going be another 10 in the next field.

Dont get me wrong my dogs will got into hedges at night after rabbits but not just at 100mph and that is the way l like it but everyone is different and run there dogs in different ways that is what so good about hunting the different ways people bring on and run there dogs.

what ive always found is if they have that extra prey drive that i love in a running dog its there full stop day or night is not going to make any differance at all to it because all they see is what they are pursuingand want it at all costs .

i would take full on everytime, full on pysically and mentally,

i like to make the choice whether something is runable or not and if i decide to run it then i want a dog thats in the same frame of mind regardless,

and i like that dog think he can kill it no matter what,

its my choice not the dogs,i like a dog to run with drive an heart not one that lets quarry get away over running an extra 10 yrds or not running 20 ft up a track cos its hard or not trying for the one on the edge of the wood because its close in,

when a dog runs with its head an not its heart the results in the bag suffer 100% fact,,,,,,,

ive got a boxy type of dog here an love to see them run like that, clever???

no not at all he ran 200yrds up a road left blood prints an still killed.........

full on,heart,an drive, for me ive got no room or time for anything else

im not worried,

the dog was cared for properly afterwards and is in his 4th season,i would exspect the same again if the situation arose,i love a dog that loves his job simple as that,

Good luck because if your working that type or dog regular it wont last long,,, if it does then it aint doing much.

A dog with nothng but speed and drive will be injury prone and a liability, and lack wind,, see it time after time.

thank you for information and vast knowledge, how stupid am i thinking i work my dogs regular and there lasting pretty well,

all in there 4th HARD season,

just shows you learn something new every day, thanks

:hmm: Well,..I'm only an old rabbit hunter,.and just like my fat whippet,..definitely well past my 'sell by' date,..

But,..even though my bitch has suffered permanent cruciate ligament damage on her back leg, and also,.as she twists and turns,. her shoulder joint, torn and ruptured at an early age, regularly slides out of its socket

And in truth, she is only any use now as a 'marking dog' for the ferreting game,...and we still keep her on, as a pet,.

HOWEVER,..,I feel 100 % sure that if she could speak,..she would definitely say,.." Better to have lived one day as a tiger, than a thousand as a sheep.”.....

And me to...

i cant afford a dog with out a brain,if a dog dont stop at a hedge ,he may at the road/lane. imo i think different quarry makes a dog have different prey drives. my dog wont run unless the odds are in his favour on a rabbit, but if it was the same situation and deer was the quarry she wont stop, she slows down at the hedge tho so thats a bonus. how many times have we seen other dogs run and think, that dog will kill itself before the end of the season,my dog is valued to much for me to think could this be its last run. although accidents do happen

 ,, Brains,, or anticipation in a dog does not mean lack of preydrive at all,,the brainiest dogs will hit cover when they know its worth it,, depends how big the gap was at the time.
