THE DOG THAT GIVES 100% COMMITMENT EVERY TIME IT RUNS, REGARDLESS OF GROUND OR CONDITIONS WILL ONLY BE LUCKY 4 SO LONG. I HAD SUCH A BITCH; 3 PINFIRES IN 2yrs & EVENTUALLY HAD 2 LEARN HOW 2 STAPLE A WOUND FM A GREYHOUND DOC FRIEND THE COST WAS GETTING RIDICULOUS. ANY ANIMAL THAT CATCHES REGULAR NEEDS HEART,THAT BELIEF IN THEMSELVES TO GO THAT EXTRA YARD. THOUGH I BELIEVE THEY ALSO NEED A FORM OF INTELLIGENCE FOR THE DOG 2 WORK OUT HOW 2 RUN THEIR CHOSEN GAME WITH SUCCESS & ALTHOUGH THE DOG IS GAME IT HAS ENOUGH SENSE TO VARY ITS GAME PLAN ON A CHASE & NOT CRASH IN2 A SITUATION THAT WILL PUT IT ON THE INJURY LIST IF NOT THE FATALITY LIST. A DOG WITH HEART, BUT BRAIN ENOUGH TO GIVE IT SOME RUNNING SENSE IS NOT A COMMONLY AVAILABLE DOG IN MY OPINION

just your opions lads and lasses want you want in your dogs ,do you want run trough brick walls and fences for its game or would rather use its brains and not take all the hits and knocks ,some people

So the dog ran 200yds leaving blood prints and that impressed you, well fair play to the dog pity about the sheer ignorance of the owner, don,t worry though you will have plenty of admirers on here.

100% agree [preban]

Over half of the deer and charlie I caught pre ban were caught out the lamp when the dog had followed it through the hedge, over a fence or wall so I no wht I prefer. If u have a dog what's on the arse f sumthing and it goes through a hedge or over a fence and the dog don't folow then its useless, same with a dog tht comes back s soon as he's out the lamp on a chase

lets be honest ,...why have people bred ANY terrier blood in to lurchers ? ?..... for years people have bred beddy/whippets , wheaton/whippets , bull/whippets ,it isnt to add coat as there are pure running dogs out there carrying thicker/heavier coats ,it isnt to add nose , as there are better marking/scenting dogs that are naturally quicker ,and not to add brain as there are other dogs to fit that bill, its to add PREYDRIVE , ...... to spice up an an area , that some dogs can be left wanting in ,in other words , to give the dog an extra edge ,this type of commitment from a dog, must be very benificial to a lot of lurchermen or these breeds surely never would have survived as long as they have.........

:whistling: is that your dog in your avi,do you run rabbits near barbed wire,or was all the scares done by that sqirrel, lmao

Be nice to find a happy medium between brains and a balls out runner though I'd imagine a dog of that make up is born with it rather than trained imo..........the ground I work mostly is brutal for a dog with endless obstacles littered all over, old level workings and old collierys with girders sticking out of the ground and old steel cable littered about, not to mention the sheer drop offs that would have you carrying many a do or die dog home.

The bitch I'm using at the moment is steady though that maybe down to her being familiar with the ground rather than her using her brains, though its only got rabbits on there so I'm not so bothered if she misses the odd one as she usually ends up putting them to ground.

Pre-ban on other stuff I always tended to lean to the balls out type dog as they sometimes only got that one chance at the catch and dogs that used there brain tended to miss a bit more game

prefer a dog thatll hit a hedge after its prey and not pull up but run through a brickwall no cause the quarry wont run through it so the dog wont. buy that saying i take it you mean stop at nothing to get its prey then yes i prefer drive and determination over brains anyday. tag thats what percentages the dogs got init in my avatr hes not even 12 month there though.

I like to see a dog use its brain, knowing when to run and how to press the advantage to gain a catch, they can be selective and will miss the odd one that a full on dog could have accounted for,im not interested in catching everything that gets up so don,t mind failing on a run or two.Smarter dogs stay relatively injury free and work well into older age,the bolder dogs seem to pick up more niggling and more serious injury,s and have a propencancy to quit completely on bigger stuff.

i would take full on everytime, full on pysically and mentally,

i like to make the choice whether something is runable or not and if i decide to run it then i want a dog thats in the same frame of mind regardless,

and i like that dog think he can kill it no matter what,

its my choice not the dogs,i like a dog to run with drive an heart not one that lets quarry get away over running an extra 10 yrds or not running 20 ft up a track cos its hard or not trying for the one on the edge of the wood because its close in,

when a dog runs with its head an not its heart the results in the bag suffer 100% fact,,,,,,,

ive got a boxy type of dog here an love to see them run like that, clever???

no not at all he ran 200yrds up a road left blood prints an still killed.........

full on,heart,an drive, for me ive got no room or time for anything else

dogs that slow up at the hedgerow will catch nowhere near the amount of rabbits of a dog thats willing to see the chase through fact.them last couple of yards are where your quarry will make all the mistakes.imho its the difference between efectively controlling rabbits and just seeing your dog run.safety is up to you..know the land you work and dont slip if its not safe
