does the saluki do any other job but this or has abtabed 2 all aspects of work regardless of the hawk

hi

he also works on his own like a lurcher

in what way?!!

i have lurchers and a gos and work them seperate.

my lurchers been fully tame to and even protective over my gos but if i took both gos and lurchers out on rabbits then my lurhers would be dragging the rabbit around with the gos attactched.

you have trained your saluki to be a stand offish lurcher i.e. he is playing second fiddle to the hawk, just like dirtwinger off here hunts his gyr with his lurchers on jack rabbits.(which he does successfully)

for me its seems a waste of a saluki to to cover work i.e. to flush pheasants to a hawk that a spaniel or pointer should be doing as obviously they will have a better nose than a saluki and are bred and better for the job?

cracking picture love that dog great looking dog how long take train both to work together and do work them on feather and fur

hi mate

the saluki is 3 years old and has been kept with and around birds of prey since i got him, the goshawk is 8 months old, i imprinted him on me and the saluki, i kept them together 24hours a day 7 days a week with me, for the first 3 months, to achieve this they had to live in the house with me, come to work with me and spend the weekends at country shows and stuff to get the bird used to people and dogs etc, the saluki is at present pushing pheasants out of cover for the gos, i havent killed a hare with the gos yet, i have flown him on 3 or 4 and he flew them for a good while but i didnt have him in the right condition at that time to commit himself to binding onto the hare, but this year after the stubble has been cut he will be

an older bird fitter and stronger and i will get him onto some rabbits and then the the hares, then bring the dog into the equation, it will all pay off this year, ;)

Please keep us up dated at the back end of this year  its nice to read fare and feather working in harmony

your entitled to your opinion mate, i on the other hand am quite pleased with them both,

flying a gos on its own is easy running a saluki on its own is easy, working the two together is a bit harder i dont want dogs that drag gear all over, the more i can do with a bird or a dog the better,

I was just talking about this today, while ferreting, that my lurcher could never work alongside a BOP for the very reason, that he would pile in on the kill.

shame really, as it does seem a real smart partnership if he would stand off the kill.

How have you managed it mate? Truly an interested question, and no a niggle.

Some interesting points there. The only similar situation I have seen is when a rabbit bolts with the ferret still attached: I expect my dogs not to grab the rabbit and drag the ferret all over the place. Most of my dogs have the utmost respect for the ferret and wouldn't hurt it in any way, though the Whirrier is likely to lay hold of the rabbit, but he makes sure he's at the opposite end to the ferret LOL

I know it's very different to a bird and a dog, but the same degree of respect for another animal is involved. If the dog never got to make a catch for itself I would feel sorry for the dog in that it was never allowed to do what its instinct and nature were telling it to do. That would be my only problem with a catching type of dog like a sighthound or lurcher never getting to grab its prey. Not the same for a Spaniel which has been bred for many years to flush and retrieve once dead.
