matmorgan 49
Men with a genuine love of their hounds and chosen Quarry. Men who know how to condition their charge to perfection. Men with Respect for their Hounds, Their Quarry and the Countryside. Men who know when to say enough is enough. After all they are flesh and Blood and not Machines. well put. Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,132
The one thing I've seen mentioned a few times is RESPECT, I think this is something which is severly missing in todays world. I'm not particulary old (34) but I had nothing but respect for the old boy's who first took me out with dogs, I listened and didn't pretend I knew it all. They taught me to respect not just the dogs but everything that was involved in running the dogs, the land, the wildlife ( not just what you were going to kill) and each other. I'm now keeping dogs again because I can give the dogs the amount of TIME they need ( I'm bored of going on the p*ss, and would truly rather be out with the dogs) I also want my lad to have/do what I had/did as a kid , unfortunately the old boys that helped me are not well enough to be out anymore . Although I am by no means a "top dogman" I will try to teach my lad what I think is fundamental in being a "top dogman", hunter or person RESPECT I would also add the people I've seen who were good with there dogs and caught a lot of game didn't brag at all........ 2 Quote Link to post
optimus 447
I often hear the term proper or genuine dogmen-man what is your definition of one of these two? Do you fit that definition be honest? YOU WILL KNOW YOURSELF IF YOU FIT THAT LABEL OR NOT, & SELF PRAISE IS NO PRAISE I BELIEVE. TRY ASKING THE PEOPLE THAT KNOW THE PERSON IF HE IS A DECENT DOGMAN IF YOU MUST ASK ANYONE Quote Link to post
Catcher 1 639
What i will never understand is why some of the so called true dog men will put a dog to sleep.at three or four and some time,s sooner .Saying it never made the grade. Then say a dog is only proven at 5 / 6 of seven year old.Maybe it,s the owner who cant go the distance. TRY ASKING THE PEOPLE THAT KNOW THE PERSON IF HE IS A DECENT DOGMAN IF YOU MUST ASK ANYONE The first to answer second part, thanks, that's why I'm asking u to ask yourself,I don't want no one to praise themselves just ask themselves do they fit the criteria for a proper dogman, the criteria being the answers given by thl members, if not then try to be like what is expected from other lurcher- terrier men an u should be on ye way to become a genuine, proper dogman or woman.thanks Quote Link to post

undisputed 1,664
Not many around and not to many on here. I know of a few, one has posted above, and has been rather modest. Never have i seen a man venture out as much with his dogs, and runs such a variety of game. Dogs which our worked day in day out learn to take all quarry effective, and realise the difference in each animal they course. Another has just joined but being the dog man he is, i doubt he will ever post, just read and obsorb, learn and laugh.. Dogmen will not hessitate to work alone, will walk mile upon mile, day after day seeing nothing if nessacery, to find that elusive ground. Once upon, he will share with his closet friends. The ground wil not be battered, afterall he goes out everyday, if not every other, as his dogs are fit enough! He will leave the land to reap, he wont smash it to bits with in a month. He will have enough to go, or find pastures new. door knocking, country laning, petrol station filling, all to work his much loved and cared for animals. The wife comes second, she understands his drive his comitment to his animals. His love of the countryside, the glens, the fields, the walks, scrambling around, looking, foridging. She also learns to love his passion. How can she not, he has found and dicovered places no one ever goes, valleys of sheer beauty. Mainly he admires the game he catchs. Sometimes he wishes it stayed alive, the account and power was so good. A dog man does more miles in a year than all the marathons put together. What a load of pish! Quote Link to post
