Irish Lurcher 1,013
Lads What are you hooking arrangements regarding presenting a dead bait. Most anglers I know use the standard jardine type snap tackle; length of steel with one treble attached to one end of the wire, the second treble is tied above this, to far above the bottom for my liking. My question is what is the distance you prefer between both hooks when you attach the trace to the bait? I like to attach the top treble, the one nearest the swivel deep into the root of the baits tail, the second treble is then attached halfway down the baits flank. The reason I prefer to attach the bottom treble so far up the baits flank is to ensure I don’t have a deep hooked pike. I am a firm believer in pike welfare, if you can’t be bothered to treat the pike with the respect it deserves that you have no right to cast bait. Quote Link to post
Guest JOEB
I will start by saying that I have no pike fishing experience at all IL......... What you say about your hooking arrangement all makes sense, the thing I would think a novice to pike fishing would have to consider is: What size baits are you using in regards to the size of Pike that may be present, this would dictate the position of the trebles on the bait? It would then be trial and error to find the optimum position for your trebles. I dont konw if trace lengths would make a difference as Pike are not bottom type feeders, it would only make a difference if you were using legered baits as a shorter trace would give an earlier indication when it pivots on the lead. As I say, no experience of Pike fishing so would be very interested to read others comments. J Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
JOEB, Pike are very much bottom feeders, The vast majority of large pike on taken on ledgered dead baits. Pike become more active as the water temp rises, and fodder fish become more wide spread. Pike will aslo feed hard on the bottom during he warmer months. Quote Link to post
Ricky-N.p.p 0
If I@m using whole fish as bait then I put One hook through the nose of the fish and the second one half way down that way when retreiving the bait it will look like an injured fish ! p.s I eat alot of pike, but i dont kill any over about the 3lb mark Quote Link to post

I am a firm believer in pike welfare, if you can’t be bothered to treat the pike with the respect it deserves that you have no right to cast bait. The distance between the two hooks depends on the size of the baits I will be using in conjuction with that trace, eg. if it is a livebait trace then the hooks will be closer together becasue I mainly use smaller baits when using 'livies'.... Whereas if it was a deadbait trace then they would be further apart becasue these baits will be bigger.... the top treble, the one closest to the swivel, is placed into the tail root of the bait and the lower treble into the flank of the fish, basically like you do it Macca..... Guest piking pirate
For alot of fishing i think that the basic deadbait hooking arrangment is by far the best way the only other way i can think of i use is the method where you put the top treble under the dorsal and the bottom under the pec, this is for either livebaiting or for paternostering a dead or a roving dead as it appears more natural to the pike.
