Too old to learn or just the right age to start??

Hi all,

 

I have the opertunity to take a 6 month ESS on, is this a good age to train a gun dog up?? He's got the basics ie sit, stay and lie down, recall is a bit dodgy and he's not been anywhere near a gun. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks mate, dont know his breeding tho, i found him shivering his arse off tied to fence at about 11pm last week, kept him for a few days to see if owner was local but nothing, took him to kennels to see if he would be reclaimed but as yet nothing. They said if i was interested i could have him after seven days. He's a lovely thing, really well natured and got on great with my Lurcher, wasnt even bothered when my toddlers were all over him he loved he attention and they loved the interaction!!

 

If there's a chance he could be used to bush and retrieve i will def give him a home.

ahh i say give him a go. his recall will get better once he knows you and once he learns his name. and 6 months is a good age to start training. good luck

Aslong as he isnt a nervous wreck and is nice and condident Id take him on mate

perfect age to start to build on the basics, most of the springers i have seen haven't really got their head in the right place until about 14 months to 2 years and still they are a

 

bit mad at times, i really think from 2 years on they really show what they can do...

if sit and stay work is done then youve got a result mate.keep refreshing it though.the rest of the stuff you need it for will come natural.good luck with it fella.
