New Lurcher Help Please!!!

Recommended Posts

Just got a new lurcher, I'm new to this side of hunting, I have got her sound with my ferrets and she's a really good dog. I was speaking to a dog "Expert" today and she said that catching rabbits is illegal, but I know it isn't so I'm still going to do it of course, that was the whole reason for me getting the dog. anyway, so she will chase, but the "Expert" reckons that lurcher's aren't very intelligent and that she will not bring anything back to me. I am not bothered if its going to be hard work, I just want her to bring back what she's caught. thanks for reading

by sounds of things the so called expert nows jack shite

if you wont dog to bring back to hand learn from young age with a tennis ball retrieveing that then wonce pup is retriveing that go to a skinned dummy get it retrieveing that for a while to you no every time the dummy has been thrown dog is there caught and when you call dog it brings it back to you the more times you do this the better if dog plays up dont go chaseing it call it again until dog brings back to you the more time you put into the dog learning it this the better as it will become a natural instict for the dog wonce it has been doing this for a while all best with the dog

all best.

Cheers lads, im gunna keep trying on the retrieve, how can i start this process off because once she has something she will just run about with it, so how can i get her to come to me with it and exchange it for a treat?

I'm still training my pup mate,

found it best to start with a toy in the house somewhere where she can't get away from you, hallway maybe, throw the toy( not to far) and when she picks up the toy call her back ( work on re-call first) when she brings it back make a big fuss of her and give her a treat, do it a couple of times and stop. Mine picked this up easy with practice. Next take her in the garden and do the same lengthening the distance ( don't over do it keep it short and fun).

I've been using a rabbit skin dummy now and she's taken to it well, I throw the dummy and she retrieves it most of the time, I also hide it from her in the garden ,I let her see where ,take her away and send her for it she's got good at this.

The only time I have a problem is if I try to do any retrieve training with my jack russel around, she's really dominant and it makes it hard work.

I'm definately no 'expert' but this maybe of help to you

Good luck

Kev
