im aware of that mate im talking people that half cross staff to say a patt or russel if they feel the need to add bull to there terriers maybe they should look at the terriers there using my opinion

yip i tend too agree that some try and use it too make a bad terrier produce something thats better wrong way too go but its also been used on good well bred lines of terrier but through tight breedin

Here in the States if your working in the ground abosolutly no need. Really no need at all as there are fine terriers about that do the days work and are down from a family of fine dogs. I see allot of that getto sh#t going on were one gets one because they look like a small apbt or market as such to non-hunting buyers. If the dog line is lacking imo its the easy way out to add bull blood. BUT BUT as I speak I have 3 terriers with APBT in them for one reason only SIZE. I recently moved out west and needed a bigger dog to do coyotes. To get a terrier that is 30 plus pounds you have to put somthing in there.....

Do you hunt the coyotes above or below ground?

A real good terrier bitch worth breeding from is hard to come by so a game bull bitch is the next best thing in my opinion as a base line.Id much rather have a litter out of a first rate game bullbitch than a second rate terrier bitch. Its easy get on your soapbox when your fortunate to come across a good terrier bitch to take a line from but sometimes you just have to work with whats available and take stepping stones to get where you want to go.

I like that CHUBBS and no bogger i dont think everything on this is reasonable.I thing theres a hell of a lot of shit on here, but also some gud posts I dont know what type of terrier you keep, but if i did i wudnt slate it the way you have the bullxs imho any terrier that can go to ground and stay until dug to is a workin terrier regardless of what way its bred. Some like them hard some like a sounder,i like a dog that stays the distance no matter what dept or what sort of soil or whatever the case may be and i dont like diggin more than 1 hole so thats why i keep what i have

Bogger if you like what you keep and it does the job for you,it dosen't matter what colour they are.Had a very gud lakey bitch bout 15year ago.She was blackntan and she always through a white pup even though she was never put to any dog with white in it and none back through her breeding either but they worked and worked well.Best of luck to you and your dogs

I had pitbulls, one Amstaff, several SBT and my friend had a pedigree bullterrier. The latter was utterly stupid.

When I just started into working terriers I couldn't find any good one yet and I bred a nervous, tiny Russell to the Amstaff. The Amstaff was intelligent, steady and hard. Eventually I sold that lot since I got a German hunt terrier and a good Lakey/Russell then. Don't know what became of the Staff crosses. They grew way too big for earth work anyway.

I didn't like the Staffordshire bullterriers I had either, because they were really cowards. Someone here in Belgium breeds SBT to Patt and says they work well for him for he digs the big ones in Germany. These dogs don't work well for me because they are too big for fox earths, one enormous disadvantage is they fight with, and kill, other terriers. We work our dogs in packs to wild boar and I can't tolerate any fighting among them. Any terrier I can't cure from it, goes out. My first two hunt terriers I lost at a big game drive hunt, later found them back: ripped to shreds by a collegue's Staff/patt crosses.

Another thing is these Staff/Patts don't bay to tracks and game above or underground and just take down healthy deer in the maize and kill the wild pigs instead of driving them out. The hunters don't like that.

So bull cross if you can find a good small healthy quiet non pedigree bullish dog and your terrier according to you needs it, go ahead. It takes a few generations of sane sensible working terrier blood to breed the bull sh*t out again and the nose, sense and voice and good small size back in. Not to mention the inclination to fight their mates instead of the game, and chew them to death if game isn't present.

Isn't it easier (so you don't have to breed back 2 or more generations to be able to continue) to begin with good working terriers and if they need something, outcross with other good working terriers lines who have that? There are plenty of workers around, both the ground specialists and the versatile sort and those that can do it all.

I believe this whole bull issue is a bit fashionable these days.

Of course bull blood is running through probably all of todays terriers. But why add it now, better select out the runts and keep the good ones, then you will not need to cross.
