home made mole traps

granda bob , is the man that made them in cumbria and has shown quite a few folk how to do it,dunno if he was the first to make them with gas pipe ,

when i first met him , he wouldn,t pay silly money for mole traps when me could make them on winters nights for nowt,i have a double spring one off him that can catch two moles and the single spring single catch ones he favoured

the biggest trouble with them is they are time consuming to set and bob was pretty good at using them and he could only manage to set around 80 a day, once i showed him how i set half barrels, he started using them more and realise he could set 200+ on good ground in a day he moved over to using nothing but half barrels,i sold him sum at cost , just to help him out , when i sold up all together , he got around 200 older traps off me and is still using them now, real nice fella is bob and always has a funny tale to tell

i never made any ian, i have caught with them , but i try most traps i get for my collection, even caught in one of those monster traps called talpirid

yes the old methods are the best

No disrespect intended for the old timers, but I really can't agree with that statement. In my opinion a competent professional trapper who really knows how to tune and use Duffus, Talpex, or other modern traps, can run circles around anyone using the old methods. Not to say the old methods don't work, just not as efficient as modern traps, in my opinion.

Hmmm, thats open to question.....many a good tune played on an old fiddle!

I'd like to see some made with proper clay pipe as per the original Saxon design.

I know this chap as Bob the mole...used to see him at the midland making purse nets on Simon Whiteheads stand...really nice ol' guy.

Your right Steve Albano the mole does have to enter the trap quite a way but the killing loops are at the end of each trap .

These are the traps that Mr Duffus designed the half-barrel trap around :bye:

Hello to the mole catchers. I only recently discovered these forums & Hunting Life. Lots of interesting stuff posted on here.
Part of my duties as a maintenance man on a private estate is pest control and that's how I got into mole catching. I'd done plenty of rats, mice, wasps and ants etc before the mole hills started bubbling up, so I found an old Duffus in a drawer and went from there. I started doing private mole jobs last year - all gardens so far - and have started generating a useful 2nd income out of it. Just beer money at the moment but more than enough for a few pints. I like the work and am fascinated by all the different traps and their suitability to different situations. I use a lot of Traplines and I'd be interested to have other opinions on them - the good, the bad and the ugly if you like. Although I carry Duffus and Talpex, I've gotten into the bad habit of defaulting to tlines which has revealed that certain moles won't have anything to do with them - they seem to just chuck 'em out the way. They also often fire without catching. Not on every job, but often enough to remind me that there is always another tool for the job. I really like the Trapline, and I'm working on refining my setting technique constantly. Just wondered what other mole men's experiences with them were. And to say hello.

      Just out of interest......

Which trap do you reach for first? You can explain why if you choose.

For me, it's the Duffus every time, although I can see the attraction of the Talpex type traps.
