Born Hunter 17,798
Fair play to you wanting to try the ferrets. Sorts the wheat from the chaff the rats do and pretty quickly as well. But if your not really into ratting ferrets, surely you could borrow a smoker? They are piss to make if ya can get hold of an old engine... Quote Link to post
hickymick 37
Hey guys, just got the ratting contract on a pig/chicken farm...(not really into ratting, but if i do it, i get a large amount of good permission) I will be taking the ferrets, terriers, lurchers... worked rats many times but not in such big numbers. Just wondering what kind of a kicking my ferrets will be taking? Please if you havent ferreted where there are lots of rats, please dont try to guess an answer or make one up, i can do that. I also know a smoke machine will be far better and easier but for now we only have the fezzers... Any sensible advice would be much appricated. Mainly on the ferrets and will they able to take it... Thanks. Atb Russ fek me russ something you know nothing about, lol.well here gose you will need at least 4 to 5 ferrets small ones, that meny cos some just wont work rats,if you carnt dig them dont put it in with the rats as they gang up on your ferret, seen it meny times 3 rats hold of one ferret!if you can dig to them use ferret but be quick to dig to them, you carnt use a collar cos it restricks the movement of the ferret in the fight, yes russ fight your ferrets wont last long ratting, carry antibiotics or pen, tabs after the ferret has been bite which it will, open tabblet pour a bit in your hand nd spit into it to mix it in,most ferrets will eat your spit,if you find all your ferrets dead nd want to try the smoker, best ones are old chainsaws with blade nd bar removed, tree surgens scrap them often but while smoking keep your dogs away from fumes, could ruin a good marker, there is also airguns nd the one i like best to use but that one's not to be put on here for all to see if you want me to help i would only throw live rats at you to see if you was scared..lmao at the thought of that..runforyourlife atb russ Quote Link to post

gnipper 6,521
You need someone who has a smoker and a handy terrier to come and help you Quote Link to post
fieldsman 51
I would not use ferrets unless you think little of them. It can be an horrendous way to lose ferrets if you think any thing of your ferrets us a smoker. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Honestly Russ mate i wouldn't bother, its just not worth it in a big place, you will have casualties in some form. Pig and chicken farms the rats tend to be eating the animal feed and be pretty big and dirty. They also have plenty of distance to travel bellow so don't bolt so easy, whereas a smoker fills up the tunnels. Also in a colony that size you WILL meet pregnant does and those with young. If you do it, then you will have fun for a bit and then one of the ferrets will get sliced up bad or come out f*****g wild or worse end up stuck and you have to dig down through layers of shit with rats fuckeing everywhere and stick your hand in. Get a smoker, some tights and bean cans, good terriers and a whacking stick of choice and leave the poor ferrets at home 2 Quote Link to post

ban is just a word 43
we spend most of our summer helping the keepers out ratting, used ferrets before, some ferrets dont like rat sets others love them, only ever had one not come back out, most the others come out with scratches etc. 9 times out of 10 the rats come off worse though, this summer weve got a dairy farm and its living with rats from top too bottom, i rate the smokers more than ferrets, especially when were working dogs but hay ho thats just me, got one this morning up me garden with the beddy whippet 1st cross b*****ds eat all me chicken food lol good luck on your new contract Quote Link to post

Irishmac 5
sack the ferrets, use a smoker. Quote Link to post
Moll. 1,770
Ferreted rats many, many times. Found most ferrets wont take to ratting, just come out, but then you get the special ones who likes it, they love it. Yes they can get bitten, and badly, but never lost one yet. Another thing i hear people say on these threads, but never yet ever seen, this thing about does protecting their young...never had a does protect it's young from ferret, dog or man, ever! They are more into self preservation imo. But then again i could never get away with using a smoker, found it killed more to ground than bolted. Dogs and spades cant be beaten for a good day on the rats. Quote Link to post
