runforyourlife 361
Hey guys, just got the ratting contract on a pig/chicken farm...(not really into ratting, but if i do it, i get a large amount of good permission) I will be taking the ferrets, terriers, lurchers... worked rats many times but not in such big numbers. Just wondering what kind of a kicking my ferrets will be taking? Please if you havent ferreted where there are lots of rats, please dont try to guess an answer or make one up, i can do that. I also know a smoke machine will be far better and easier but for now we only have the fezzers... Any sensible advice would be much appricated. Mainly on the ferrets and will they able to take it... Thanks. Atb Russ Quote Link to post

graham4877 1,181
simple mate get a smoker! not worth a dead ferret! Quote Link to post
pointer 543
I just use a smoker to bolt what I can then dig out what I can.after I've got as many as possible it's an air-rifle job as on most places I've been ratting you can't get them all with dogs no matter how much you want to.I've used ferrets but it can be a slow process with them getting bit up and anyway the rats are often in Walls, drains, piles of rubbish etc etc etc where ferrets aren't of use. Every farm is different so there's no way of saying what the best methods are.i love ratting but find it hard to keep finding infested places here in county Durham. There does seem to be few about though, our dogs have taken almost 200 this month which is more than normal on our spots. fresh earth 47
Never actualy lost any of mine but i dont use my canny quiet ones mainly use a rough poley iv had for years and a silvery jill both pritty thin built compared to my others and neither tolerate other ferrets iv lost hobs trying to put them over the jill. If its seriously over run though id just knock up a smoker with an old strimmer or the likes pick one up for a bit 10 - 15 bux Quote Link to post
