scooby11 0
Hi Folks I am new to deer stalking and would like to ask what is the smallest cal rifle i can use to hunt deer. I would also like to know what permission i will need to shoot on the land that a friend of my has and is going to work, ie a police visit to check the land and so on. I would be grateful for help. Regards In England and Wales,For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used. For all deer of any species - a minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement. In effect this means the minimum accepted calibre for deer is 243 - many use this rifle with a twist rate of more than 1:9 so that heavier grained bullets can be used. You should probably have (for your safety and Police satisfaction) written permission explicitly stating what you are entitled to hunt on the land - there are some good exemplar letters around. If the Police have not already cleared that land for the calibre, an FLO may want to visit to assess sight lines and backdrops etc - worth really getting to know your land. Have an OS map of the extent of the land handy - I keep a laminated copy with the boundaries clearly marked in my bag. I also use a chinagraph pencil to mark on earths and warrens etc. plus where my good shooting points are. Small things like this will make the FLO feel more comfortable you are a considered hunter. I assume you need to put in a variation on your ticket, or are you applying for your FAC from fresh? Feel free to PM me for any more info Cheers Quote Link to post
