welshwhippet 1
I have a bit of a problem. I have a 13/14 month old whippet and have been told to take him out with an expirienced dog for him to learn. The problem is that all he wants to do is f**k any dog he sees, male or female. So he doesn't see the bunnies cos he's got other things on his mind. Is it something he'll grow out of or will I have to neuter him? If so will it spoil him as a working dog? Quote Link to post
Moll. 1,770
Have exactly the same trouble with my whippet Cannot take him ratting because he keeps locking on to any bitch preoccupied ratting Edited to add...take him out on his own, he shouldn't need another dog to learn lamping Edited January 17, 2011 by Moll. wuyang 513
All the whippets i had have been shag mad, but would turn off if there was something to chase. Might be worth taking him out alone, he will pick up the idea in no time. He will still be shag mad but hopefully once he gets the idea he will switch off while hes out working. Ive always said whippets are shag mad. Quote Link to post
welshwhippet 1
Is it a problem with whippets in general or just ours?? Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
Certainly common in the ones ive known. Quote Link to post
welshwhippet 1
Would neutering make any difference? Quote Link to post
tripletree 75
My MALE WHIPPETS only get horny when there's a bitch in season. Kaspa who's proven only when they're ready to recieve Batty unproven does tend to extend his interest before and after but soon settles down again. I think in an unproven dog sometimes the urge to prove himself can become overwhelming sounds like that's whats happening with yours. If mine had excess energy like that I'd take it out on it's own around areas where rabbits are daytime get him focused whippets usually don't need much encouragement to enter Quote Link to post
fresh earth 47
Never had this problem but mine and my mates are always out in packs twice a day mixed age and sex and randy youngsters are soon put in there place so they learn its not how to behave. Take him out with a bitch that will put him in his place but not overly agressive to the extent she will seriously hurt him he's still young enough and should submit quite easily and once he realises he cant get away with it he will stop it the ones im out with dont even look at a bitch till she reaches about 10th day of her seasonand then theyl start showing interest as they know they will get over her the next day or two. As stated though he dont need to be with other dogs to learn and sometimes it can actualy provoke yapping through over excitement. I know a lad who had a cocker like that was dinamite in cover and on water but wanted to bone everything at the beating he resorted to a shock collar but blowing the head of him wouldnt be my idea of training and would be my last choice. Yeah my whippet bitch is always mounting her son she doesn't do it to any other dog but she's always done it to him I think it's dominance thing. Quote Link to post
paulsmithy83 567
It's a dominance issue, it should be corrected as soon as he tries it. It's nothing to do with being horny there are more breeds more prone to doing this it's to show there top dog in the pack and if there trying it on humans it's there way of saying they see them selves as top of the pack so all I can advise is correct it every time it does this Edited January 17, 2011 by paulsmithy83 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Yep wants to shag and bitch or even object if bored until there is something to chase. I just think its his way of passing the time. Not a bad life is it? Quote Link to post
