damo79 2 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Share Posted January 17, 2011 hey fellas/ladies im new to the hunting with terriers,got myself a border terrier cross parsons jrt bout 5 months old ,his parents are working dogs in cornwall,im from plymouth..got him for abit of bushing and just mooching around (rabbits and rats)i know hes a tad young for rats yet so hes just been having a rag on dead ones ,hes been out with mates of mine that have jrt's and he seems real game for doing what the older dogs are up 2 .. the thing is that i was out the other day on my own with him just looking round and showing him afew rabbit holes and then we found a biggish one witch he started havin a little growl at then he was gone ,not 2 far down as he was back when called and it was only about a min ..but got me thinking i should aswell have alittle spade with me just in case,mite be being abit paranoid i know but dont wanna lose the little fella ,so went and bought a little fold up one .thing is someone said people mite think im after badgers and could get done ,is this true ? dout it as most of the time we have ferretts with us ,but that day i dint.... also any advice would be welcome and anyone in my area devon/cornwall that would like to meet up or need any work done with the dogs give me a shout, like i said there are a few older terriers cheers Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,775 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Share Posted January 17, 2011 Bigger and sharper things than rabbits live down holes too and if your pup can get down one a bloody fox can get down one. And yes, if you are seen walking about with a shovel and a terrier in the country, you will most likely be accused of digging. Best advice I can give is, learn how to identify what lives down what holes and stay away from any you dont want your little tyke going down. Even then, terriers being terriers an accident will happen eventually (you wouldnt believe where a fox can fit!) and youll need a lot better digging gear than one of them fold up jobs.
