vld 62
Hi All, This developed when bitch was 2 years old (after a bite - despite it being well cleaned) - best way to describe it was kind of blisters with puss underneath which eventually scabbed. It has improved to its original condition but its left her with no fur on her nose and her nose still looks scabby. Is not itchy and is not contageous (kenneled with other dogs) Have spent a fortune at vets over the years trying to establish cause with no results: Swabs and blood samples taken all came back clear Put her on £60 a bag special dog food in case it was some food intolerance Had antibiotics, this that and the other but nothing has totally cleared it up. Its not affected her performance in any way but its frustrating all the same not knowing what it is. Has anyone had anything similar or can recommend anything else for me to try? skycat 6,173
Could it be some kind of auto immune problem? maybe like 'Collie'nose', where the dog's own immune system attacks certain skin cells? Don't know much about it but a friend of mine had a little lurcher with a dash of Collie in it and it had a very similar problem. Have you tried the dog on a raw diet and adding Kelp powder to the food? Not saying it will cure it, but anything's worth a go.

Thank you Skycat - - I appreciate your help and will certainly try out what you suggest - where would you buy kelp powder from - is it readily available - I've not heard of it. Again -thanks and will hopefully sent you pictures showing improvement.
skycat 6,173
I'm not guaranteeing a 'cure'but if you've already gone the vet route and they haven't found anything, then try the following: raw diet, no cereal at all except cooked rice. (This is in case the dog is intolerant to gluten.) I feed one dog I have that has skin problems the following: beef mince, minced whole rabbit (you don't have to mince raw rabbit but some rabbits we get are ancient and have leg bones like steel bars LOL. Get chicken carcases from butcher: they usually chuck them. Tripe. Breast of lamb (butchers strip most of the meat of these then dump them) You can now buy any of the above from BARF suppliers: there's loads all over the country: just Google BARF suppliers. Add minced or pureed raw veg: I use the following, though only when available and I'm not fanatical about feeding veg every day: sprout peelings, spring greens, spinach or spinach beet (very good for skin problems) carrots, apples, french beans, celery. In fact pretty much anything except potatoes and onions: you can google what is good and bad for dogs amongst veg and fruit. You only need about a tablespoon of veg per day so can mince or puree and freeze in ice cube trays. You can get Kelp powder from Dorwest Herbs: again: google that name and you'll find their website. They are the best suppliers of herbal stuff and supply many vets as well. Good luck: don't expect an instant miracle: some things can take months to reverse or cure, but all the above will certainly be good for your dog anyway and won't do it any harm whatsoever. Another satisfied customer. I had a dog, which developed similar symptoms on his muzzle and lips ,turned out to be from lime the farmer had put around his orchards ,but this would not apply at the time of year. Seems you've solved the problem P. N.B. Hope my first comment isn't misconstrued,
vld 62
Fantastic results in just over two months on a new diet and the kelp powder! As I say the vets tested her for everything and were just left scratching their heads after about 2 years of trying allsorts - the colours even come back in her nose ie its gone black again - before it was a sort of greyish colour. I'll put another pic on in about 6 months - I'm pretty sure by then her nose will be " as good as new" - BTW - no scabs at all in ears either.
