trenchfoot 4,243
Took on a rescue lurcher early December, to replace the gap in the pack left by the loss of a grumpy old cur. This lad is at a guess collie/bull x grey/saluki/whippet, but its anyones guess. I liked the look of the lad and he has a nature that wants to please. I have spent the last 6 weeks getting some condition on him and working on the basics of recall and stock steadyness. A couple of daytime mouchers with the others have shown his steady side. he is eager to please, but seemed to lack drive. no sign of following the beam when let out in the garden. took him for our first night on the lamp for just a couple of hours tonight. First paddock was a squater near the fenceline, picked up the rubies straight away, slipped at 30 yards, but lost under hedge. took a couple of pips to get him back with lamp off. back on slip and next paddock. Nothing but big ears, so left for another time. Next 5 acre paddock had a few rabbits out. first one slipped away. next one flattened out nicely. walked up squatter bottled it at 20 yards, a turn, a missed strike an acrobatic pickup made me smile. retrive was nowt to brag about but at least in my direction and not crunched. gave it up no discussion. next paddock is along a bank that backs up to forestry. Dog is now following beam when I give him a click. Lamp off, dog still wired. A bark from bank gives the game away. 3 roe bounce away with a protest into forestry. this lad is starting to look like having bigger horizons than I hoped for I came home not long after that. pleased as punch. dog at heel. just 1 in the bag, but a feeling of satisfaction that looks like its about to pop a cork.
