toddsmaggie 3
If your planing on going out at night feed in the day as normal. Then just befor you go out the door lamping use B12 vit and electrolytes and after every good run give a couple of squirts of electrolytes. if i had to do that with my dog id be looking at my fitness training. sorry mate just being honest. No worries mate...whys that then mate.Im always happy to learn. The electrolytes will help with cramps from losing salt ect and build up of lactic acid in the muscle...That has nothing to do with fitness. your just replacing what has been lost. The b12 helps to produce energy rather than the dog running on a full belly. A good dog dont need all that sh*t Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
Lads who said about feeding pasta... I have read a few times that dogs do not use carbs for energy like humans. And that they get energy from fat. Is this correct or not? Gaz. 1 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
If the dog is getting enough fat and protein in its diet it shouldn't need extras apart from veg for vits. and minerals. Maybe a handful of bread, pasta or rice for roughage and bulk. You are right Gareth: dogs derive their energy first and foremost from fat. They are not like humans who need slow release carb. derived energy. I know loads of people swear by carb loading a dog for a day or two prior to a hard day's coursing: the dog would run just as well without those carbs providing it is getting adequate fat in its diet. skycat 6,173
I should have added that some heavily Saluki saturated dogs DO seem to run better if they get more carbs than a sprint type dog. Modern thinking is that specific breeds of dog which evolved in different parts of the world do better if they are fed what they evolved to eat. So Saluki types would be fed a diet containing pitta bread and rice in their countries of origin, and Huskies would get a very high fat diet. Personally I've noticed that my Saluki types do indeed keep their weight on better during a hard season's work if they get a few extra carbs, but that is every day, not just for a day or a meal before they are worked hard. If I feed any carbs at all to my Collie cross she gets fat, but she can do well on half of what I'd feed another type of dog of similar weight. Dogs are like people, they vary a lot in the speed of their metabolism, even within the same breed or type. Just pays to monitor each dog as an individual and adapt the diet accordingly.
