advice on working a ferret

just spoke to a bloke from ferret rescue and he said to me he doesn't have working ferrets. ny qestions are 1. how does he know weather or not they came from working stock and 2. if young enough surley they will pick it up over time surley it's instinct to hunt???

he prob doesnt have a clue if they've been worked or not, but picking up a young one wud def help, mind u not all ferrets become good workers, but giving the ferret enough time you will no

its just instinct mate for a ferret to work. Just make sure you collar them up

to be honest mate most ferrets regardless of age should get the hang of it soon enough, you may have a frustrating few outings to starts with but am sure they will pick it up. I would have though that most ferrets will have come from working stock within a generation or two anyway. But what I have found is that although obviously better to only get working stock I have found that its often down to the ferret itself. I have had (working) litters in the past where half of them have turned out crap and also had ex pets that work out really well.

ive had many ferrets give to me that have been pets and most off them turned out good workers,its in them

There's ferrets and there's ferrets mate even getting kits from somebody who works them is no guarantee yours will turn out grafters .

Totally agree with The one All ferrets will get the general idea of working but there's a big difference between a good sharp working ferret that covers the whole set and a ferret that just is a bit more steady aint as sharp and doesn't work the whole set and overall aint a grafter. Ideally buy a ferret of a mate who you've been out with a a bit and seen the parents work so you know they're good working parents this will give you the best chance of getting a ferret with potential.

thanks for the reply's guy's apretiate it shame the guy wants £30 for male and £40 for females which i thought was a little steep as one of my pals rang them the other month and ask if they could take his ferret in and he said no i have to many i can't even give them away
