The Big Fish Fight

Recommended Posts

Has anyone watched any of these yet? I was aware of discarding and fishing quotas before but didnt know it was like this. 20-30lb cod being thrown away cos thats not what their fishing for, tons of decent fish being dumped dead. Its a proper, proper shame but its good to see how much momentum and support this campaign has got, i think they might actually be able to acheive something. Ive signed up, if anyone else wants to have a look here www.fishfight.net

I fish commercially for a living and it would be good if this national disgrace did recieve more attention. Any system that forces the discarding of dead fish will never work and is totally unsuitable

The problem is not mesh size, which have increased, or days at sea, it is the discarding of dead fish. Mesh configuration is more important than size, towing harder can constrict larger meshes ,square

ALRIGHT MATE.YOUR RIGHT ITS AN ABSOULUTE FXXXXXXG DISGRACE.

WHY FEED CRABS WITH PERFECTLY GOOD FISH THAT IN THIS DAY/AGE COULD BE MORE PROFITABLE AND COST EFFECTIVE TO KEEP.

NO WONDER OUR FISHING FLEETS ARE ON THE BACK FOOT AND IN THE NEXT20YRS WILL PROBABLY BE EXTINCT .

FISHERIES MINISTERS SHOULD GROW SOME BALLS AND FIGHT BACK INSTEAD OF TAKING IT UP THE AXXXE ALL THE TIME.

IVE SIGHNED UP MYSELF.ATB.

I fish commercially for a living and it would be good if this national disgrace did recieve more attention. Any system that forces the discarding of dead fish will never work and is totally unsuitable in a mixed fishery, nothing and nobody benefits from this travesty,

The fact that this happens at sea and is pretty much invisible is the only reason it continues, imagine a similair scheme on land, rotting corpses strewn about, there would be uproar.

My boat is equipped for all types of static/passive fishing but nowadays we really only pot for shellfish as we are never given any quota for anything else and even when we were encouraged to rig for mackerel lining ,which we did at considerable expense, the quota of 300kg a month wasnt viable.

The only reason that shellfishing has remained viable is that we,the fisherman, have been instrumental in several sensible conservation measures,ie,pot number limitation and voluntary marking and releasing of pregnant females.

Left in the hands of cluieless scientists, the corrupt EEC and our uninterested gvernment the uk industry is doomed.
