pointer28 1
Hi all, Just got the offer of a well bred Greyhound x Whippet and have to make up my mind in the next few days as the lad that has them is in the UK and will be coming over next week and can bring it with him. I just want to know what people think of them as allround lurchers for mostly lamping, some ferreting and maybe a fox if we stumble across one (in Ireland). Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
Fast beast, with brains to burn, should make for a good bunny catcher. Quote Link to post

pointer28 1
Cheers all, I've never had a lurcher and I was afarid that they might be a bit soft skinned or lack the agility and toughness of a collie or bedlington cross. Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Im thinking about using whippet/greyhound x saluki/greyhound dog over my bitch, hoping to add a bit of extra speed without losing too much of the hunting ability and stamina. Aside from speed and sharp turning ability, what do you think whippet/greyhounds bring to the table compared with a pure greyhound? Interested to hear views on what their stamina, hunting ability and general robust-ness (?) is like Quote Link to post
stoaty 171
Had 1 late 80s was a bit backwards to start but when it finally clicked in what a dog their SO fast.superb cross for bushing with terriers and spaniels imo top gear in no time.My dog threw to the whippet although he was a genuine 1st cross.Broke his neck hitting an oak tree on the tail of a rabbit.Didn't want owt to do with a fox though stoaty Quote Link to post
the fezz 44
my old 3\4 whippet 1\4 grey was the best hunting dog iv ever owned , she would hunt and bush all day long , plenty of stamina, but the only thing was her skin, she would rip her self a lot (IN THE VETS ON A MONTHY BASES) but that was due to the catch or die trying brain that she had Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Them replies say it all more take off speed and more stamina than a purebred not stupid either Quote Link to post
rusty 0
got one myself only problem i,ve found is they are a bit prone to a few knocks but apart from that they will give you 110%, mine has surprised a good few lads. go for it. Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
my old whippet/grey bitch was the best hunting dog i ever had... her upside was that she was highly intelligent, worked extremely hard and was easy to keep... she would have lay about all day and never made a noise, i used to think she was mute lol... believe it or not but she came with the terriers a time or 2 and was able to draw when needed and thats the truth.... her downside was she tore easy and felt the cold alot more on a cold night than the rest of the lurchers, i had to keep her on the move all the time.. she also had a hatred for cats and killed them at any chance she got... the nighbours hated her lol... she is the grandmother to the pups i have now and i have i hopes for them... Tina 1
agree with all the above, my bitch is the best dog I've ever had, happy to sleep all day and work all night, or vice versa, hardly barks and has a passion for cats too, really hates them! and has never once had even a cut, had a couple of knocks but never has opened up with a cut *touch wood* Quote Link to post
