TAKE IT YOU HAVE HAD THE DOG CHECKED 4 INJURY???MAYBE YOUR DOG HAS JUST WENT STALE & OFF IT`S RUNNING, IT HAPPENS 2 A LOT OF 1ST YEAR DOGS, BUT MOST OF THE MUG RABBITS SHOULD BE GONE BY NOW & IT DOESNT MATTER WHETHER SHE HAS THE SPEED OR NOT, ITS WHETHER YOUR DOG RECKONS IT CAN CATCH THEM OR NOT.IVE SEEN MANY 1st YR DOGS LOOK GOOD EARLY ON THEN LOOK ORDINARY WHEN THE GAME GOES UP A GEAR. DOGS ARE INDIVIDUALS & THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL LEARNING CURVE.. I WOULD LEAVE HER OFF FOR A BIT & BRING HER BACK WHEN THE RABBITS ARE DOWN A BIT. PERHAPS YOUR DOG JUST LACKS CONFIDENCE OR IT MAY BE IT SIMPLY WONT MAKE THE GRADE FOR YOU, BUT IF YOU KEEP RUNNING JUST NOW & SHE KEEPS MISSING THE OUTCOME WONT BE A HAPPY ONE. THE 1 THING THAT MAKES ANY DOG IS SUCCESS & GETTING FUR IN ITS MOUTH. SOUNDS 2 ME LIKE YOU HAVE PUT A LOT OF TIME IN2 REARING YOUR DOG SO GIVING IT A BIT OF A LAY OFF CANT HURT...ATB,

some good advice thier people.thanks for your replys.going to take her out with another dog tomarow.till now she has worked alone.atb.mat.

Heyup Matt,, has she been running the bigger stuff mate ?,, this sometimes knocks them off the bunnies.

As the other lads have said she maybe just needs another dog there to kick her up a notch mate,, makes a big differance if another dog is present in some cases,, it can deffo click a switch if a dogs always been ran solo.

My coursing friend who runs his own line bred salukixlurchers sometimes if he thinks a dog is running a tad lazy or not upping the gear to strike when it is good to do so,which does happen in all breeds, he will slip another in on the run too basically give it a kick up the arse and get it to up the anti,, only takes a few runs doubled up like this and the dog starts pulling its weight again as its been tricked into competing with the other dog aswell as the quarry.

I reckon bess will be backflipping on the slip lead when shes sees another dog on the case,, all the best fella,, .

p.s are you working her from the slip or free mate ?

hello mate hows things.i have not been running the bigger stuff with bess.just that one accident on the beating line that she decided to wrestle.atb.mat.

Arhh ryt,, optimus is talking sense Matt,,, the thing is ist getting the easy kills for a young pp to get it confidence up which is what you have done,,, but i always like to stretch them when they are young with rabs on faster ground,, i think it is possible to give a young dog too much easy gear, green rabs in thick grass will be fodder for any half decent dog,, if the tides have turned fast she is now out of here comfort zone,, this is where lads make the mistake and get rid of dogs.

If she has been bashing stuff in long grass and all of a sudden the game has moved up a peg,, she maywell just need time to adjust her running and get to grips with it,,a layoff maywell be good idea, when bringing he back out after layoff i would let he see your mates dog for half a dozen runs, then let her have a few see if its made a differance.

Also p.s are you lamping her from a slip lead or freestyle ?

WONT HURT 2 GIVE HER A BIT LONGER. YOU MAY END UP CURSING MY ADVICE IF THINGS DONT WORK OUT 4 U, BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN LOOK IN THE MIRROR & SAY "i done my best by her" & THATS WHAT BEING A DOG MAN IS ABOUT. TAKING YOUR DOG & MAKING THE BEST OF ITS POTENTIAL. THEY CANT ALL BE WORLD BEATERS BUT THEN IF THE DOG SUITS YOU & ENDS UP DOING A JOB THEN WHO CARES WHAT OTHERS THINK?? BEWARE OF THE "if its good enough its old enough" nonsense THAT SOME RECITE OVER & OVER AGAIN MY FRIEND. SEEN MANY 1st SEASON DOGS GO STALE AS THE GAME GOES UP A GEAR THEN COME GOOD THE NEXT SEASON. PROBLEM IS THAT PUPS FLATTER TO DECEIVE, MEANING THAT THEY SHOW FLASHES OF POTENTIAL EARLY, BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN IT WILL CONTINUE WEEK IN WEEK OUT. WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK WITH HER & I HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR YOU

cheers optimus.she will get every chance to come good.a friend of mine who got me into this game many years ago said that he thinks she dont like the feel of fur in her mouth.when she does catch she really mouths them before carrying back.gonna take her out with my mates dogs and see how she fairs.if in a couple more outings she is still struggling then i might lay her off and just do some dummy work with a rabbit skin.i still have fairly high hopes for her cos she is keen enough while chasing.its just the picking up/catching bit.plus ive got to give the rabbits a bit of credit..there feckin moterin on this short grass lol.atb.mat
