jasper65 6
Been out of fishing for a good few years exept on the odd occasion. I picked up my late brothers fishing tackle a few months ago and must admit I'm now looking forward to getting out freshwater fishing again. Looking in his old Fishing Basket was like looking back in time with a few Mitchell Reels Includeing a Match with the Auto bale arm all in good fettle. anyway just had this site fired over to me by a pal! some cracking looking hand made floats . I'm looking now to get a decent reel I can pile on plenty of 12lb line atb Jasp Quote Link to post
mattyg 1,862
im pretty sure you can get deeper spools for em, maybe a look on ebay, theers loads of mitchell 300 stuff including spares and stuff! never had a thing go wrong with mine and its been in the drink more times than i can remember! good luck with getting back out on the bank and putting a bend in your rod! matt Quote Link to post
DIDO.1 22,563
What sort of price does he ask for those floats? bet they arnt cheap. I would love some of those perch bobbers. I would think a row of those in an old float box would be a good investment, something to put away for the grandkids. Quote Link to post

I still reckon the workaday 300 series was the unsong hero of their day though . Check-out the Intrepid "Surfcast"at the back. It holds a lot of line but talk about fishing tackle meets agricultural engineering !. As for that chap's lovely floats . True works of art. A far far cry from the knobbly old cork and match-stick floats we made as kids . Edited January 31, 2011 by comanche Quote Link to post

A far far cry from the knobbly old cork and match-stick floats we made as kids . I was looking on Ebay the other day Comanche and there was a old reel on there I had when I was a kid! it was called a "Intrepid Black Prince". My brother borrowed it one time and hooked a good size Eel which pretty much smashed the cogs up . also found a old Shakespeare 2400 in the old fishing basket, it must of been brought in the 70's and still a cracking little reel ... comanche 2,923
Ah,the Black Prince. I think they cost about a quid new. Mostly used grafted to one of those cheap six foot solid glass rods with plastic handles . Intrepid made a series of reels with Royal titles to supposedly denote levels of quality .Black Prince(cheap an chearfull , The Regent (nice device for the price),The Monarch ( expensive and absolutely awfull design). Like you Jasper I have a Black Prince tale to tell. A friend and I were invited sea fishing from a small boat . Being total beginers I simply wound some heavy line on big centre-pin and took my cane pike rod . This just about sufficed for the job . My mate went to Woolworths and bought a cheap boat rod and some strong line but decided that his Black Prince would be man enough in the winching department . All went well while we caught mackeral ,doggies etc . It went a bit amiss when Barry hooked a conger eel . He actually hauled it up to about ten feet under the boat whereupon the reel locked solid . The fish hung in the water just out of reach of the gaff before hurtling back down and snapping the line .Barry was left shaking with a wrecked reel.At that time none of us had seen a fish that big and were nearly as shocked and upset about its loss as the guy himself . The spell was kinda broken when the we heard the skipper on the radio to his mate on another boat laughing and saying " Got some idiots out today. One just had a conger about 25lbs up to the boat".. . .. "No mate , he lost it. Four foot Woollies rod and a f***ing Intrepid Black Prince. What a tw*t!". jasper65 6
what a classic!!! Just spat my coffee out laughing at that one .... I remember also having a cheapy Shakespeare closed face reel as a lad which also chewed its cogs up bringing in a Eel on the releif channel. do you remember another reel called a "Gallyon 13R"? must admit it was a cheapy but lasted a bit longer than the other two mentioned .. Jasper I recall the "Gallyon" make but not the exact model. Some of those cheap fixed spool reels of the 50's 60's and early 70's were'nt much better than the things you get in the Pound shop today. Still , they worked well enough until the line sliced through the bail arm and the cogs disolved into a sort of grey sludge. Them was the days . No worrying if your rod had the latest ergodynamically designed handle , or your reels matched or if the fish you'd just caught had been caught the previous week weighing 3 grams less . Hours of fun from the crappiest of tackle and the fish did'nt even have names !. Quote Link to post
