What Age To Start a JRT?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

What age would you recommend to start a russell off for digging? I've read that you shouldn't really do anything with them for the first 12 months, to let them toughen up a bit. Is this correct?

Cheers.

some breeds r different 2 others but i would leave it till 18 months r so till they mature a bit dont want 2 start a young dog 2 early and ruin it,damo.

Well mates I feel that every terrier should e treated as an idividual as they each mature at different ages, some early, some are later starters..What is key is to always take them away wanting more careful not to get them too banged on at an early age or before the terrier is properly mature and this applies to any working type may it be russells, paterdales, lakelands etc.... Just my two cents mates..atb

it all depends mate let your puppy be a puppy for as long as possible, i made this mistake once and boy did i leanr by it, by entering a pup too early, they'll either take a nip and shit themselves and not want to work to ground or in my case go totally the other way, your dog'll go fox daft smashing into its quarry and coming out of a dig needing a good 2 weeks rest to heal which is the last thing you need as the season only lasts so long, best of luck with your terrier mate, theres no rush to enter your dog let it enter on its own accord.

hope i've helped

cheers ryan

Obviously not mate If this man knew anything about terriers he would know that well bread Russell's are proberly some of the most hardy and reliable dogs to work to ground, I've shared quite a few digs with a local old timer who used to dig for the tynedale hunt from time to time and he had 2 right keen earth dogs and they were russell's, so I think our friend needs to only open his mouth if he has something helpful to contribute

Keep it real
