StevoSmith 147
The HW77 .22 is more than capable of taking quarry.........the only issue is the shooter...this is not to say your not up to it mate......its a matter of confidence and capability. There are many reg's here that use the HW77 on reg basis and have no prob im sure they can give you tips on this.....maybe start on static targets(paper, cans, card)before trying live quarry to gain confidence we all love to shoot but none want to wound and make live quarry suffer Edited January 11, 2011 by StevoSmith Quote Link to post
andyz 30
I have a HW77K and it's more than capabile of dispatching legal quarry! I would definately agree with everyone else to ensure you're confident enough to hit the kill zone without causing suffering to the quarry! Good luck with the rifle I'm sure you're gonna love it! andyfr1968 772
Nothing wrong with the 77, it's one of the best springers there is. If you're having problems with it, maybe it's not set up correctly. You say you think it's not up to the job. Why....?? Edit to say... Welcome to the forum Edited January 11, 2011 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Hi mate and welcome. First off. Congratulations on buying a really world class air rifle. Now... Asking this question of an HW77 is like asking if the stig can drive! Sounds like you are an inexperienced shooter in need of a bit of help. Why/what is making you think your HW77 isn't up to the hunting task? Likely, it's one or more of the following; in order of likelyhood. 1. You need more practice and a bit of coaching help. Just ask here mate. 2. Pellet choice. You need to try H&N Field Target Trophy. OR RWS Superdomes. OR both! If you aren't using these already. 3. You need a better scope. One that can hold zero against spring recoil. (The 77 has little but, some!) Bisley make some good things like pellets and accesories, but scopes? I'm not convinced. 4. Is the rifle new or second hand? Either you may have a bit of running in to get through or, the previous owner has not been the most caring of handlers. 5. You need to join a club. You'll get a lot of help, advice, all the facillity you need and even help with getting a permission of your own. 6. Keep us up to date with how you are getting on ATB Simon Quote Link to post

The 77's nearly a 30 year old design but the good folks at HW did a bloody good job to begin with, it's still available new now and most of HW's similar designs are based very closely on the 77. Most of the folks putting up stuff on youtube or whatever, don't want their egos hurt by useing an 'old' gun, so you'll not see very many posts with folks useing older kit There's been a lot of good tunes played on an old fiddle...... pianoman 3,587
Hi monkey. All right mate. Things are looking more promising then. Pellet-wise, I've not used H&N Hollow points but, H&N Field and Target Trophys are beautiful. Very stable and consistent. You'll need to wash them in a bowl of warm water with a drop of Fairy Liquid as they come with a fair old bit of swarf and dust. I lube mine with a very light coating of WD40 and, they are superbly accurate with my HW77 and HW80s. RWS Superdomes are also known to be excellent performers in HW77s and they cost a couple of quid less than the H&Ns per tin. ATB Simon Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I can only mirror what others have said. the HW77 is the cream of spring airguns.I have owned three different 77's and i loved them all. Just looking at my diary for 1996-97 season and i bagged 204 rabbits with my HW77. I always liked light pellets in mine, good luck. Quote Link to post
77 si 21
Hi Monkey I have a hw77 and it is a very capable gun, I would suggest taking it to your local gun shop and asking them if they would crono it for you if you have got concerns about the power just to make sure that it is pushing between 11&12 ftlbS if it does turn out that your gun is down on power dont worry you can get a new good quality spring for about £20 but if you fit it your self make sure you get the power tested after as you can make your gun over the legal limit by changing the spring if not done correctly. Hope this helps you. ATB Quote Link to post
rossy08 33
the old hws are in my eyes as good as the new ones. so have no fear there mate. just have a quick look on this thread of myn from a short while ago and see some of the replies by people, you can feel the love for the old hw's glowing from this thread. and this old girl of myn was still pushing high 11flb when i got her and still is. but as others have rightly said this new rifle of yours and any other you buy new or used should be taken stright to the chrono. this way you can be fully awear of what she is running. hears the link for you.http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/175627-hw-35/page__p__1774536__fromsearch__1#entry1774536 you have your self a very good gun there freind, all the best with it. Andy ps welcome. Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Do you still have your HW35 Andy? I can well understand if you've sold her mate but, I'm hoping you've still got her. I had a good feeling for that rifle's likely performance. One to keep! ATB Simon Quote Link to post
