iceman001979 1,316
Most dogs that over shoot rabbits are dogs that just have one speed and don't know how too use there gears this are dogs end up breaking there necks because its just drive drive drive but dogs like this can also get good bags just depends on the fields Quote Link to post
marky b 309
i think you've got to give the dog a fair go.get him fit but more importently get him lamping fit. you can't expect to take a dog out once in a blue moon and get a good bag somtime's it can take a season to get a dog to the level you want 1 Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
As far as i'm concerned, there is no such thing as too fast, on the lamp or not. It's, as has been said, how a dog runs it's quarry that counts... Has that speed been harnessed to be used as nessesary..? The problems arise when a dog has not been entered either fully or properley to both the range of quarry and the types of ground it is going to run over. You only have to look at the folk who have successfully entered pure greyhounds as lamp dogs. On the flip side, i have a lurcher in my kennel that came to me at over 12 months old, he cannot seem to come to terms with my usual lamping ground, he's not the fastest lurcher in the world but runs the dunes flat out, making a meal of the rabbits in front of him and, i'm sure, soon to come a cropper. On different ground he does well but I doubt he'll be staying with me much longer!! Quote Link to post
hickymick 37
think its down to the dog knowing when it has to run flat out and when it knows when doesnt? like on a longer slip if the quarries up and moving the dog might run full pelt to get on terms but then drop it down a gear when it has the situation under control? also could be down to how keen the dog is? i.e if its not been out for a while it will be trying harder? i know what im trying to say but dont know how to put it into words! lol nothing to do with how often the dog doesnt get out making it keener... My dogs work everyday or at least every other. They are as keen everyday... The more a dog is run the fitter it becomes, hence making its work easier, practise makes perfect pal. And if the dog was at them on a regular basis it would obviously learn these turning skills and gear control......not only going out every so often so that it has more puff... what about injurys little knocks that need rest, whats your dogs like after coming back from them???some dogs take longer to learn how to run and catch be it, on lamp or other wise. some never learn to run cunning, walk, or stalk on lamp. some run outside of beam some dont..its all in the love of the game.some change when they hit nd hurt themself some dont live that long,,i would say keep taking it out and give it very short slips, penny may drop it may not but its fun trying :hmm:atb mjr Quote Link to post
wuz 40
i have a little bitch that when she started was too egear not too fast she is a fast bitch and as it has been said she learnt to settle in with experiance but she dose take a lot of knoks runs into everything dont think shell ever change that Quote Link to post
torchey 1,325
I,ve heard it mentioned a few times on here, can a dog be too fast for the lamp ,or is it a dog that hasn,t yet learned to run clever ,,or do some never learn?? Cant be to fast, but its got to have the strike to go with it Quote Link to post

The post however wasnt about the dog being injured.. Quote Link to post
scent 509
i know a few lads that say their dogs are too fast for hares ,i disagree .I think they are too hard going and put in too much drive in the killing of them and end up going too far away from the hare when they strike.Iv 2 good fox lurchers at the moment but the only fault id have is they put everything into the strike and end up a few yards off the fox if they miss .Some might call it too fast i just call it gameness.JMO Quote Link to post
Romany 1,065
Ive rarely had a lurcher that wasnt noted for its speed..but the big bags are taken by dogs once they settled down and ran sensible, they still have the speed,. but know when to use it..pups run gamely and at times as if theyve been fired from a canon, it looks good, pups should be like that..but pups wont kill 40-50 rabbits a night on a regular basis Rather have a one that was too fast than too slow..the fast ones will usually settle down. give thema few daft slips at the beginning of the night, that takes the edge off them a bit.. 1 Quote Link to post

How can you answer the questions or indeed give your views if you cant relate to your own dogs. Should i get my answers off someone else about there dogs... I really dont understand...How do you learn if you dont watch your own dogs behaviours, very strange... Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
in fact that answer has got right on my tits! And think is it time to take a back seat on this site, like many of the other experienced dog men, who knew a lot more than most, and knew a lot more than myself. As they were just baracked and frowned upon when they used there knowledge. ThaT was when the site was descent and a question could be answered from well bred dogmen..And not chavs, pc hunters and jelous folk. Its mentioned in the post i did about JDarcys book, hare and swift hound... Good names in it and good men, yet as a few have actually come out of the closet and commented, that it is no longer worth posting on here, and certainly not Darcy as jelousy and rivalry will just get him ripped... p.s, not spitting my dumby, as the guys whop know me will know, i stand up for myslef. Just cant be arsed with bullshit like that... Someone asked a quesxtion, and then shots you in the head for giving your answer... Quote Link to post

It's a shame that nearly every post ends up like this, I've read a lot of your post rfyl both on the fishing forum and the running dogs and you know your stuff, it would be a shame to lose blokes off of the site who know what they're on about because people look for any hole in a reply to pick an argument. After a while away from the dogs i value the opinions of the more experianced dog men as I'm sure a lot of other people do. Surely this site is here for like minded people to share their views and experiances and offer advice to each other without worrying if your gonna get slated for anything you say. let's not let ego's or jealousy or whatever get in the way we can all learn a bit if we want to 1 Quote Link to post
