artic 595
I,v always enjoyed the odd pheasant , but after seeing the shooters point of view on these type of threads , I think I,ll give them a miss , I can do without the odd bird and I don,t want to mess with other peoples sport . Stanleigh, I don't go out there to specifically take pheasants, but if the dog finds one or two then fair play, and I will enjoy eating them. Now if someone was putting their dogs onto poults then posting "Yeah great look what my dog has caught" then that's But sometimes a poult may be caught. I can also see the other side to rearing and releasing these birds, it's hard work, time and £££. My dogs work for me, they find and they catch, I take and I eat it. Nothing goes to waste. Like I said in my post, "Some may find this offensive" I'm not messing with anyones sport........ It's not "Sport" to me. Thats's the problem here, too many people associate hunting by this, using the term SPORT. The term Sport was probably the main factor that made this dreadfull ban kick in. This isn't a dig at you Stanleigh, it's my honest opinion. 2 Quote Link to post
Stanleigh 135
An honest opinion well put , your right about the word SPORT , I should of said livlyhood ,please don,t get me wrong I,m not saying it,s wrong ,it,s just a personal thing , every bird I ever took was poached and after reading the other sides point of view I think I,l stop , I,m not saying I,m right or anyone else is wrong ,as I,v said it,s just a personal thing . robo-christ 40
go to agree,i wouldnt take the risk of taking pheasants with dog's,i'd just get an air rifle or something. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Never go out to hunt birds with the dog but when its day time mooching about and working hedges/cover there is little that can be done to stop them being caught. I don't encourage it but i'm also not going to bollock the dog. Also to add that most of the pheasants caught by mine are birds that we have put down and reared and then have moved off the shoot to the surrounding farms (where i have permission). Fair enough killing lots of poults, going in the pens or running dogs through the drives makes you a twat, but taking the odd adult round the edges doesn't effect the shoots, especially when a return of 50% would be good for them. Cochyn 0
My older bitch went through a phase when she was really into them, plenty of pheasants, a couple of magpies and a few crows. Thought she had a barn owl once, i would have been devastated! Turned out to be a very pale hen bird. It can be a bit of a nuisance when you dont want them to do it but makes a nice change when your in the right place. I keep her well in check on any keepered land as i dont feel you should be messing with another mans livelihood but on unkeepered ground they are fair game! She's getting better now, but a bitch that I have could be a right nuisance when trying to ferret a shoot. A mate of mine, a semi-pro ferreting man, will not let his lurchers show interest in anything apart from rabbits. Depends what you want them for I suppose. My old man had a 'pot dog' collie whipet grey and he used to catch, as well as pheasant and partridge, the occasional woodcock and wood pigeon. Quote Link to post
