I bought one year's ago and the best thing i ever did was bin it, if they get claret or water on them they are fooked as the handle swells and i nightmare to open, if you need a blade for gutting a stanley blade will take some beating.

Fair enough, we are all entitled to our opinions, my opinion is from experience with 2 individual opinel knives and i had the same trouble i have mentioned with the two of them, these are my favourites to date but im not sure if they make the super swede any more, they have a good strong blade which is easy to sharpen and holds its edge for a long time they are ideal for gutting and skinning anything from a bunny to a deer, the folding stanly knife is only realy good for gutting but a single blade lasts forever and they are easily changed, and neither of the two blades i prefer over the cheaper opinel go rusty.

Opinel do a stainless blade now and they are still sharp and hold an edge well. All different fancy wood handles on them too at not much more than a standard one. Problem being all the gun shops only sell bog standard ones and getting one off the net is a lot trickier than it used to be.

I stopped using Opinals many years ago because of the wood swelling and being unable to open the knife. I now use a JES hand made knife. The blade is of high carbon steel similar to Opinals. (never had issues with the Opinal blade)The knife is a pleasure to own and use and I must be honest here, it is my pride and joy  I never thought I would say that about a tool.

When opinel knives are new, they are a bit tight, ive got one ive had nigh on 10 year, re-shaped the blade and due to the blade getting sharpened re-shaped the handle. A good soak in linseed oil (once used danish oil) every couple of years, a bit of wet and dry of a fine grit or similar on the flat of the blade and she's good to go.

Got one of the BIG opinels also, handle a bit smooth for beasts, soon sorted with the bullnose of a belt sander.

opinel knives are a very good tool, the carbon blades are of a very good steel and keep an edge,as stated a wipe over with an oily rag is sufficient to keep it from rusting, the discolouration id perfectly normal, opinel do make a stainless steel version of many of their patterns, they too are very good but not as good as the carbon versions,

the best opinel i own is the 'opinel jardin' with its drop point its a winner.

I reshaped the blade of my old one into a drop point aswell as some filing on the back of the blade for a bit of grip, easily done, just keep cooling as you grind. & if you fcuk it up its no biggie.

Used to use opinal knives when I was younger and as said were brilliant blades but I found with a lot of opening and closing the handle would wear so the blade could fall open in your pocket, had many a hole in my pockets because of them! lol I believe you can lock them closed now days though?

It's best to use a Vegtable oil on your cutting blades rather than Mineral oils like WD40 etc. The main reason for that is the oil is still on the blade when your gutting, skinning and jointing. Which means your getting small amounts of oil all over your dinner!

With any knife I've had I always put a small amount of veg oil on some kitchen roll then wipe it down with that.

Don't forget to strop your blades after sharpening them, even the back of a leather belt is better than nothing. Hook the buckle over a door handle and drag the blade down the leather cutting edge away from the direction of drag.
