i keep sbt, one of whom i did attend alot of athletic type shows with from 1.5-2.5 years old, and yes i did condition the knackers off him to get a rosette lol,one of the best bits of advise i was giv

The reason staffords these days aren't on par with apbt is because the gene pool over here is tiny in comparison to the USA/EU/Asia where matches are held on a weekly if not daily basis, as is the amount of owners that are willing to test their dog/s before deciding if it's breed worthy...obviously laws restrict us from fully being able to assess a dog properly.

Imo it's that simple.

i might be reading this wrong, but that would apbt not staffs.? As they are loads of staffs in the the uk, some show stuff+ working dogs. But the gene pool for apbt's must low in the uk, as there are more+better dogs in the USA, and other countrys were the best dogs are kept+tested.!!

in other countries eu/asia america etc they have much bigger yards they can breed lots of litters and cull any that dont make the grade.

im told even in Ireland the best ones are imported because they havent got the gene pool to reproduce/improve what they can import

I wasn't knockin staffs I love them in there true form and if I had another it would have to be from proven line as it would always in the back of mymind be compared to my last staff I know it don't sound right but it's the truth and wouldn't be right on the dog but get me a proper staff and I would snap your hand off but as been said to get 1 you need to know where they are n I dont

What really grates on me is these staffs that are bred for " longer legs " to be " more athletic "......then they are put in super duper fit condition to stand in a show ring at an athletic dogs show and get a rossette....no different to the little fatties at crufts !

Just like the apbt these days mate,95% of staffs are good for nothing......just the 5% of good apbt,s are a hell of a lot more dog than the 5% of good staffs.

So true !

I'd take a fat bug eyed overweight staff with heart over an 'athletic staff' with none.

yeah you can have both, but 'athletic staff' people who just focus on A-frame comps etc have no concept of what heart means.

Have to agree on that statement.

Someone said "in Holland they have good staffords". Good for what? Good because they sprint faster, they climb higher?

Those people tried to change the stafford into a sort of mini apbt, but they forgot the most important, the working abilities, the heart!

They didn't even understand what is a real apbt, for sure not a conformation dog, and for sure not a sportive athlete at first, but a big heart dog as the patterdale is and how do you show this ability? On working them.

They also think that a growling dog on a leash is a hell temperament dog lol lol lol, what a bunch of clowns!

I think thats a bit of a broad generalisation, i know a lot of guys involved in the Athletic side of things, they are more than clued up on what "heart" means, just choose to channel their dogs enthusiasm into Athletic pursuits.

There will undoubtably be people involved in the Athletic stuff that are 100% focused on looks and as you say the dogs performance over an A frame. However there is also the boys that have been there and done it, and now choose to have a bit of fun with their staffords, causing no harm to anyone else.

Here there is a big difference between a sporting dog and a working dog and for sure those people don't know what is the difference.

I saw a lot of those dogs in sporting shows and they were good, and those good dogs were tested on boars, and for sure even if they could growl very loudly, they do not have big heart at all and if the boar charge them they will keep their distance!
