s.e.s.k.u 1,893 Posted January 8, 2011 Report Share Posted January 8, 2011 gutted today for the first time of 30 years of ferreting i lost a ferret, my old silver jill in a not even massive hedge row set!! i have no idea what the hell happened. she had killed in earlier but had come out of that set fine after a few minutes. i have a feeling she is backed in behind a rabbit or she has died down there possibly suffocated she was a bloody good worker and even though she did kill in the longest ive had to wait on her is 15 mins. I dont use collars etc but i will buy a set now its the not knowing that bothers me most if she has died for whatever reason thats sad but to think she is stuck somewhere sickens me. To top it off i had promised a young lad on here a young ferret which i was dropping off on my way home from todays session. i was working on the principle that 3 ferrets was enough so my 4th a young jill was superfluous. obviously now i cant give the kid it so i feel pretty shit about that i hate letting people down. The one saving grace is that the lads who owns the ground will keep an eye out for her and box her up if he sees her and as that set was next to his stable block she might just be found. i suppose i have learned a lesson although its just a ferret i do get attached to them hope you get her back Quote Link to post
auld salmon 28 Posted January 8, 2011 Report Share Posted January 8, 2011 i remember when i lost a ferret years ago before i had a [ff] went back the next day there was a hole where i had filled them in no sign of ferret went back next day nowt then the third day went back been a walk all round the fields then to the set and squeaked at the hole out come the ferret fat as a bull so dont know if it was another rabbit that dug out the hole and the ferret was stuck and had to eat its way out but was well chuffed to get her back [ff] is a piece of mind like someone said it could be 6inches below your feet Quote Link to post

Maybe now the people that say they don't use a locator because they've never lost a ferret in X amount of years ferreting and that there's other ways to get them out will take note, sometimes locators are the answer. They are a dear bit of kit but they hold if not increase in value over the years. I bought a mk1 box and 2 collars 10 years ago for £60 and I would like to think I'd get more than £60 now if I went to sell them. Best of luck in getting your jill back stroller. Quote Link to post
The one 8,469 Posted January 9, 2011 Report Share Posted January 9, 2011 I lost a jill in a burrow no reading on a 16 foot box waited till dark then blocked the burrow in every night for a week after work i went down opened up the burrow and squeaked and waited then filled it back in .On the seventh night out she came ,turned out the burrow was next to a drain and i dont know if she had bottled up a rabbit or got in the drain system guess i was lucky . But never give in if you try hard enough theres a good chance you will get your jill back Quote Link to post
