artic 595
With all this severe weather of late, it's only been a week since the thaw began. As many of us were in the same situation and some still are, I was itching to get out, more so the dogs. I decided to have a little shine over a few acres. Over the christmas period my saluki x had picked up a small injury, so after a period of gentle rest and affection I took him with my deerhound x for a little work. At very short notice, I had the pleasure to invite Hedz over to join me, who although was recieving large amounts of snow, still made his way to me driving a 100 mile treck. In my books that's dedication and a real passion for huntng. On board with Hedz was his Wheaten x Grey bitch. The plan tonight was to meet one of the farmers who was going to show us around some new permission. Here there is mainly cattle with good large grass fields. Whilst waiting for hedz I see a huge beam light shine through my living room window and the sound of a diesel engine. Hedz was here with his roof mounted lamp trying to find my house..... After a cuppa and a small chat by the fire we set off in the truck to meet Tom the farmer. We arrived and got the dogs on slips, and was escorted around to the new permission. The first thing I noticed was how claggy the fields where, and I mean claggy!! First field, lamp flicked on, showed a few rabbits very close by to cover. A few more sweeps of the the field showed a nice number of partridge on the ground, but no rabbits that were worth running. Over a few brooks to the next field, showed promising numbers of rabbits. As the night went on the dogs were doing really well to power it on through this claggy ground, and I for was was struggling to walk through it. Each boot feeling like three! Hedz little bitch can run, and standing at 24tts she can motor and stay, I really like her and the style of running she has too, she knows her job well on the lamp. She is that quiet that you wouldn't even know she is there. Throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning I stopped running my salluki x, he was showing signs that he hadn't recovered 100%. So more rest for him and observations. My deerhound x performed superbly with some lovely catches, some jaw dropping tumbles, including one spectacular catch jumping a very large ditch! I could not fault him, and is going from strength to strength. All in all, great company, a new friend made, and a joy to watch the dogs do what they know best. We covered some ground last night, and I'm feeling it in my legs this morning with a few aches! 2 Quote Link to post
