Ideation 8,216
What is a more versatile tool a top range pcp or a silenced 20/12 gauge shotgun. The gun would be used for controlling vermin (mainly rabbits) in areas and on land where other methods i.e dogs, ferrets or use of an unmoderated shotgun or a rifle (mod or not) are not possible. What are your views? At the moment i'm leaning toward shotgun. Edited January 7, 2011 by Ideation
Millet 4,497
They are both two totaly different tools for totaly different jobs both are more than adequate of controling vermin but in different situations, imo a mixture of the two with different methods of hunting would be productive. Ideation 8,216
I know what your saying - i use both a shotgun and air rifle, but have some money and fancy either an upgrade on the air rifle (the one i use is a spring) or a silenced shotgun. I wouldnt say that they are totally different tools for totally different jobs. They are both guns, and would both be capable of killing a rabbit at up to say 40 yrds in relative silence, amongst other things. I am leaning toward shotgun as it can be used on moving quarry, and could be used for more than just controlling rabbits in the areas i cannot ferret / lamp etc. Both could be used off the back of a quad, from a truck or on foot. The Air rifle has cheaper rounds and marks up the game less if its to be sold. Just wondered if i missed anything? Why do you think they are totally different and what totally different jobs would you be doing with the two tools?

Millet 4,497
silenced shot-gun all the way That would be handy for shooting rats and ferals inside of a barn or a built up area .

If you have nothing useful to add than don't comment. I don't think i've ever seen you contribute anything to this site.
Ideation 8,216
Two questions... Do you need to shoot moveing targets and is property damage an issue? The ability to shoot moving targets would be an advantage and i hadn't thought about the property damage issue, i.e - an air rifle is better suited to shooting in barns etc. For that kind of range the springer can be used i think. olim 28
silenced shot-gun all the way That would be handy for shooting rats and ferals inside of a barn or a built up area . I would suggest that you dont say that shooting a shotgun in a barn is a good idea unless you want to damage the roof or have the shot come back at you, you clearly have no idea about shooting as they are (like ideation said) for the same thing/job PEST CONTROL specifically and are not that disimilair, you are always the core of the arguement starting. Ideation, I use an air rifle a lot for pest control and would say it is effective and enjoyable hunting but I think that a silenced shotgun would do the job better because you can shoot them whilst they run so you wouldnt have to take so much time stalking them but then again there would be more damage to them if you wanted to eat them. Although I find that there is a lot of difference between the springers and pcp's and would say try shooting them with a pcp as it is a lot easier and more accurate before you make the decision. You've been shooting bullsh*t all your life, go and shoot holes in the roof of a barn and hopefully some of the shot may rebound, you know an awful lot dont you, and dont respond to this as you will start another on of your arguements.
