Advice for a newbie

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I am new to the forum but have been mooching about for a few days.

I am very interested in working dogs and have experience with training & working security german shepherds. I have plenty of time on my hands and really want to find something to do with dogs again as more than just pets.

I would love to go out with someone to see what is involved and hopefully learn the ropes before i consider leaping in and getting a dog as i want to do it justice. I should be able to get permissions without too much trouble but there's no point setting stuff up til i know what i am doing and then have a dog ready.

I have a lot to learn before thinking too far down the line and i would appreciate any useful help & advice you could give me.

Thanks

Roxy - it will be a hobby to me but i am serious about this hence why i haven't raced out to buy a dog and then asked what to do with it, it's a long-term commitment to the dog so i need to be sure on this. :whistling:

What sort of work are you looking at,mooching, ferreting or lamping or a combination as this could have some effect on what breeding you go for

You are going about it in the right way, forgot to say ignore all the numpty,s,they will have little of use to be able to show you, learn first dog second the type of quarry, terrain and lifestyle will probably play a big part in the type of lurcher that will be best suited, there,s plenty of genuine people in your location i don,t think it will take you long to hook up.

Haven't got to the point of looking at type of dog yet.

I would be interested in mooching and lamping as my preffered choices though i would like to try both if there's someone local willing to show me.

I admit to having an aversion to ferrets after i had a really nasty one that i rescued, put me off for life

Mate just get what ever dog you want and get a lamp and go out.
