web22 27
darbo it's like your describing my mate?he uses the locator after about ten seconds and wants to dig if the ferret don't move from the same spot for more than about the same!you have to keep telling him to hold on a bit,but i suppose some people can't be patient,or like to dig! Jamie m 668
If it's only a foot or so the spade going through the earth shifts um alright , a d let's not forget mixie they will sit till the end most times Quote Link to post
ledders666 6
i use locators, never had to dig yet tho. but i do think quite a lot of people overuse them: ie dig first and dont try older ways of getting ferrets out. think it detracts from skills involved in ferreting. (more patience, less digging) maybe im just lazy! jmo What other methods are there? Quote Link to post
The one 8,477
Id never put a ferret to ground without a collar , apart from all the time you save ,look at all the rabbits you would leave to ground .And its handy for ferreting in cover you can tell it the ferrets still moving about in cover or out of it . Each to there own though Quote Link to post
jarv5116 57
I ferreted for 10 year when was a kid without a locator. think I can remba losing 1 ferret in 10 years, its handy having a locator. but its not a must. Quote Link to post
ferretman89 68
basically you dont need a collar but you run the risk of loosing a ferret if you dont use Quote Link to post

Each to there own though me also i collar all mine,if you know your ferrets working style you know what thier up to below ground,my large hob runs threw like a greyhound ,if he dont show at any holes i get out the finder normally hes got them up a stop end.but with my smaller jills they take longer and try and shift them rather than kill,i find the locators speed up things or how far your fert travels vdown a hedge, and if doing a set at 3pm and darks drawing in you got the kit to get em out if needed.also if one ferret is located under ground and you dont gat a bolt u know rabbits are bottled up ,so you can enter a bigger hob to shift them other wise you may move on losing those rabbits. stevethefish 80
Always use collars, if the ferret kills or hold the rabbits for more than 5 minutes the spades are out. We do it for pest control to get rid of rabbits for keepers and farmers so waiting is not an option for us. Can you imagine what the farmer would say if we were sat drinking tea talking for 2 hours in the same spot, not seeming to be doing anything? If you do it just for a few bunnies now and again or just for something to do for a couple of hours fine! if you came out with us you would have no hesitation about using the collars. We dig to save time, sitting drinking tea waiting will not result in big bags, not here in lincolnshire where its almost all hedgerow work. I am not saying that its the same all over the country, I suppose small shallow warrens in open fields will be a breeze but 5 foot down on a hedgerow you can be waiting a very long time. Just my opinion not all will agree..... Here is a dig from today, Stevo retrieving a rabbit with 2 young inexperienced ferrets, they have to learn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tVB_PggMdw Quote Link to post

Mate I agree that there a usefull tool and I have a locator. but when I was kid I neva had £120 for locator so you do without. We still enjoyed ferreting and caught loads rabbits. if you cant afford a locator you can still ferret. its just not a must have imo. 1 Quote Link to post
