lola_digga2010 0
i cant believe im writing this. i took my youngest bitch out for a quick shine about 3 this morning and after seeing nothing else i slipped her on a rabbit on the way back to the van. what should of been a standard run has turned into my worst nightmare. she ran the rabbit well but went over a dip in the field and then all i heard was the most ear piercing scream ever so i ran over to find her fitting in a ditch full of muck and water. i didnt move her just held her head untill the fitting stopped, which seemed like an age and she came to again. i gently lifted her out the ditch and on to the field and she just lay there unable to move. i tried lifting her and she just collapsed. i knew this was time to get her to help urgently so i carried her to the road and carried her the half a mile or so back to the van. i put her in the van and she just slumped down, tried to stand up but couldnt and just gave up there and then, not moving till i got her home. i rang round the 24 hr vets but two never answered the phone and another was busy till 8 so i stayed up with her in the garage untill my vets opened and got her in there straight away. the vet was brilliant, never bothered about me and her being head to toe in muck from out the ditch just concentrated 100% on the bitch and after a full examination he has said its likely she has done spinal damage BUT could also just be severe bruising along her back. we got her walking in the surgery but she kept walking sideways and her legs kept crossing over as she walked. she is still up there now for observation and more tests i just pray to god she will be ok as if this is the end of her career it will be such a shame as she was coming on brilliant. ill keep you posted im due some good luck so im hoping it comes in now, she is in good hands all i can do now is wait and hope for the best one of the risks of running dogs tht we all hope and pray never happens hope all goes well mate but looks like you have plenty of support on here good luck with her atb lola_digga2010 Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Stewie, gutted for you mate, I know what your going through. If you remember when you pm'd me earlier this year, I had just the same thing happen last year. My dog suffered severe spinal trauma last year from a ditch fall and didn't stand for four days. On the day the vet was gonna put him out of his mysery he stood for just a little bit, a few seconds, so they held off... When they did it was still a total waiting game BUT with time he made a full recovery and i'm sure your bitch will too. Everything comes to those who wait! Take things very slowly, it really does take time. Best of luck mate Quote Link to post

Best of luck mate yes mate i remember it well and thats what gave me hope when the vet mentioned spinal injuries that she should/could be ok in the long run no matter how bad she was as yours was "severe" and my vet never mentioned that dreaded word believe it or not id never personally heard of a dog with spinal injuries untill i pm you but that one pm soon meant a hell of alot more when it happened to me, especially the detail you went in to. like you say just have to take it slowly with her now and any more advice off you is welcome mate, thanks again  Quote Link to post
Guest stewie
So glad to read that she is ok, poor girl though she really does look a different dog, her face says it all, i really hope she comes back as good as new but im sure she will she's strong, even if she doesn't at least she is still alive. cheers kay its horrible seeing her like this even though she is drugged up on morphine she is still in agony i wish i never slipped her now but i cant think like that whats done is done and just have to deal with it now Quote Link to post
Guest stewie
thanks so much to all of you that replyed it means alot :notworthy: im pleased to say that the vet has given me plenty of positives and there is not one broken bone in her body!!! she is just very sore and really battered and bruised along her spine. he said dogs that have been hit by cars get of lighter so that shows how fast she must of hit the ditch. she walked shakily out of the surgery and went to the toilet by her self which is a good start but i had to lift her in the truck she is feeling really sorry for herself the vet said she has got to rest for at least a month and then slowly build her fitness up after that but as far as he is concerned she will run as good as new given time. she is dragging her back leg still and cant stand up straight as you can see in these pics im in no rush to get her back in action, no point in making it worse for her in the future so if she misses the rest of this season then so be it. so for now shes confined to the sick bay but id rather a sick dog than a dead one so im keeping positive, thanks all again ill keep you posted on her recovery fookin horrible to see her standing like that as she a outgoing confident dog but least she standing get well soon queenie cheers mate its took it out of her thats for sure, f*****g crazy how things can change in a split second from that night out we had to this in a week  ill bell you tomorrow mate Quote Link to post
