17 magpies.....

Recommended Posts

Had a walk tonight with my mate. I had it in my head to try and break my record of 21 maggies. The sky wasn't good and got progressively worse but we managed 17 before i decided to quit. Also saw many dozens of woodies and ignored most of these except five, one of which was very poor and was left for fox food, the plump four are for my food.

Visited some old roosts and it was plain to see that some places the maggies have moved, so i will have to do more rooting about to find them before i make a record attempt again. Watch this space! lol.

But with 17 maggies and 5 woodies in the bag it had been a superb night.

ps, edited to add, Yes i know theres not 17 maggies in the pic, we didn't fancy carrying a load of maggies about for the pic, we carried on to another roost after this pic was taken.

Have to tip my hat to you J Darcy that's a darn good bag by any standards, and a vary wary bird too, as Si points out. How about a thread letting us in on your secrets for a good maggie hunt?

Hi Pianoman, i might continue this thread over the coming months and tell a few little things i have learnt about the magpies. One thing for certain is that they do not like high trees. Some of the top roosts i used to really shoot a lot of maggies from some 20 years ago are now gone. The silver birches have gotten too big and the magpies dont like them. Some of the old roosts only hold half a dozen birds, but now i have the buzz to wipe the local magpie population out again i can see me finding them once more. The best place last night was a patch of an acre or two of spindly oak and birch with the odd hawthorn in them. Lots and lots of woodies, but i am leaving them for a little while until i get my hw77 sorted and will see what a good night brings. Like i said before, its all about the cloud......

p.s, i am thinking about doing a small piece for the Airgun World, but i dont know if they would publish it or not?
