Saluki Coursing Gazelle

Recommended Posts

I agree that dog is fair moving, you only have look at how fast the bushes flash past!

The IMO UK coursing Saluki's are every bit as good any in the world especially with new imports coming in from time to time.

I am well satisfied with my Saluki's, saying that I would'nt mind adding the right desert blood  .

An other interesting study carried out with Saluki's on greyhound track I think in Germany or Holland, where they timed salukis in the track doing continous laps. as they completed lap after lap their times decreased instead of increasing.

Good vid, I enjoyed that! :clapper:

I just had a quick look at the anti-coursing vid posted earlier in the thread. Now, I only did stats as part of my degree, but...

73% of people in Northern Ireland regard hare courisng as immoral.

73% of people living in the countryside want to see an end to hare coursing.

84% of people in Northern Ireland regard hare coursing as cruel.

Is it just me, or do those just not add up any way you look at it? :hmm::laugh:

I have owned dogs with Saluki blood in years passed (from Dick Smith's line out of Liverpool Lou the Legend of Lincoln, Calendar Cup winner - bred to Saluki blood from Pat Sweeney in Eire etc etc). I think IMHO that to get the best out of a Saluki it should be an indoor dog. Just look how they're raised in their own country. They're treated like feckin' kings.

Not to say they should be pampered, just that the breed has developed as an extremely sensitive and loyal one, and locking it in a 6x4 run most of the day isn't going to get the best bond between man and dog. I can't help but wonder whether this is how they got much of the "intractable" reputation amongst people mainly used to greyhound types?

My bitch was a house dog (the only one allowed in at that) and was like my shadow and had brains going spare. Even at 16 weeks old when she used to be told to "get in" when I was wanting to walk to the corner shop without her... I'd put her out in the yard to play while I was gone, get to the shop, exit after buying whatever and the little sod would be sat there outside the door proud as punch waiting for me. How? She'd scaled the 6 foot fence in the back yard to track me down (there are several shops in the immediate area) and wait for me.

Once I cottoned on to what she was doing, I'd have a neighbour (a fellow lurcher enthusiast) keep an eye out on the house/yard while I went out and make sure she wasn't actually following me by sight. Sure enough, the bitch was waiting five to ten minutes before "sneaking" out after me and wind-scenting after me. Clever cow :thumbs-up:

I'd own another like that in a heartbeat, wonderful dogs.

Had a similar experience with a pure saluki this one lived in but took a shine to my father he really liked the dog and everytime i visited him made a right fuss of him sharing dinner with him sat at the side of him must have liked the peace and quiet there and a never ending supply of titbits anyway end result was everytime my back was turned he would hightail it back to me dads best bit was he had only ever been there in the car he only lived two miles away 1st time he went there it took him half an hour next time five mins i ended up giving him to him he ran his hares as has been stated wearing the hare down before attempting to strike doubled up he looked useless for the first field but after that you could watch him catch up and if the other dog hadnt pulled it he would soon overtake it trouble was where i was coursing the fields werent massive and there was no need to travel far for a good coursing sessionand i already owned a quick killing dog that was capable of four out of four singlehanded so as he had chose my dad i let him have him the dog had had a hard life being coursed hard and bred to everything when he was kept on a travellers site at newark so i think he deserved a break i used to take him out now and again when pike fishing on the fens and even unfit hed still knock a couple over only dog ive ever owned that didnt take to me he didnt mind being took out as long as i took him back only the second one i had ever seen then 76/77 the other being a dog called trevor that won the spewers two years on the trot against some of the best harekillers in the country in the right place they are unbelieveable but i must say i do like a dog that gets straight in for a kill pressuring its hare saying that i wouldnt mind one from a pup especially for the bigger stuff [pre ban] seen some belting purebreds on deer

rl=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4V9l4ChELo]Carted Deer Hunt[/url]v Ive kept lurchers for 37 years, for coursing lamping ferreting, and all bush work ,I also shoot and beat on shoots my dogs have taken all game ,so I am certainly not an anti ,but that Carted Deer Hunt was F*****g disgraceful, the idea of running quarry with dogs, any quarry ,is that it is run on its own ground,so it knows the terrain and escape routes ,that deer was obviously disorientated and unsure where to go ,plus the whole thing was protracted unnessasarily ,noone seemed to know jack shit about what to do once the deer was at bay a very unedifying spectacle, with an animal stressed out interminablywhatever you want to call it ,dont call it hunting.
