what was your all time best shot?

Recommended Posts

hmmm worst but worst is on a fenix light with two filter layers, paced out an area on a corner with two tree's and a third shrub, middle spot was the furthest i'd consider and marked it with a clump of grass at 60 yards, (they were usualy this side of it..), so out i go with a plan..peeps around the corner and took a shot, dropped short, i could see the .177 heavy in the scope, cocked and cracked a head shot, right on top the bonse lol... went over and it'd gone? looked the usual kicking leg distance, then looked a bit further..hmmm dammit!

nipped to see the next morning and i'd onlt shot one at 78 yards...it's kicked out into the grass above, i'd walked to the middle spot, but...in the lamp on the third 'too far' tree there was a clump dohhhh.... i thought it was the middle last night lol........oops.

68 yard up a path twighlighting, its covered in white gravely brick stones and half berried into the mud n growth, but come night time with a keen eye you can see the bunnies outlined shadow... it was light but the sun was half down on the horizon, and it was sat by one of my practice marker piles...another on top the bonse lol.. a few kicks but out in one.

pigions on wires? god know how far lol..i've stopped doing them because its to far to walk! hahaha.

squirels...getting sick of gearing up for the 15-45 odd, only to pull a three yarder, or 5 yarder lol, yu cant see them in the fuzzy image and have to keep lifting your eye and work out what every thing is...dunt arf leave some blood from the head them shots..

but.. many years ago i was out with old .22 meteor..cracky maggie stopper up to about 20-25 yards after that was a heapa doodo, but the sight fell off, one of those dints on the gun groves that grips, to set it up yu tap the open sight across with something metal.. long story short i was on a 1 cm peice of airial tube, the fat end like, as a for sight, so, i'm stood under a squirrel jump, two long branch's overa path there, waiting,(i'd been so close to flying birds consistantly i though right..that squiz) and true enough, along comes the little james bond, darting about, three shots on it's still running the route, dodging the shots right up untill it went out of sight, then i heard the branchs and it scurried to the jump point just in time to meet my pellet mid air lol.......yes! i thought lol, bin after him for weeks lol. (i was young but hot lol..oops). was only an 18 yarder, but straight above my head, bloody orrable posision to hold a gun.

at sort of 17 ish sparrows were on list, we were popping a few 20 yarder heads with thopens on, when one flew off to about 30 yards, sat for a mo almost beconing us, my mate missed and it flew to about 35 yards ish...behind the branch's, but i knew where it was going, just instinct probly, lifted up and put the sight on, matey shouts up yu cant see it, i reply no but i can hear it and blew its head half off its shoulders lol.. only done a few handfull of shots like those, knew a guy who was popping squirrels up to 40 yards in oak canapies, he knew where they were behind the leaves when they pee'd.. i had to see that to beleive it lol.

the peist de la resitance was on top a big jill over looking some waiste water hole, looking at a peace of plastic pipe, the loo overflow type pipe on halfa building wall, had one shot missed, second shot hit dead center...abuit 240 yards ish lmao, couldnt hit it all day after that though.

speed shots... rifle slung on shoulder pointing barrel up, i'd had a six week try of those single point sights, yu cant see through but you focus one eye on target, tuther see's a red dot, they were shite to begin with, well.. i couldnt hit jck s..t with um, untill...maggie flies straight over me and is about to land on a fence, i knew exactly where and when.. to back track a few days, a guy had met up with me and shown me how to swing the rifle from the trigger grip by lifting it forward, spining my rist and catching the fron grip dead on target..

needless to say as the maggies foot touched the gun came to grip and wacked it square in the neck part the shoulders, there was no stopping it after that... untill the bunnies started apearing, the usual 50 yarders were a forget it, the standard 45 yards...still a forget it, the dor was that big it covered about three bunnies, i just couldnt see where they were behind the dot...that got wardrobed and back onto the 4x40's....ahhhh clear vision again lol.(the shoulder spin worked even better after that lol).

fast snaps....birs a tweeting through the grass, without thinking i lift and snap shoot a head shot, trouble was i was waiting for it to stick its head up for a quick look then bob down all in one ....was instant!

had a few that season to the same affect...

a lot of people rate it by how far, buthave you tried it how close? theyre the hardest to judge because the tragectry climb is nearly to every foot a dot sort of thing with zero room for mistakes, and no time to duck lol....ever had a sparrows brains hit after a rikoshay? lol....theyre pink alright lol, and mark yu jacket later.(mateys pellet hit me second hand then the brains landed...

my favourate of all time was a half inch branch end, about 60 yards odd down a sheer mud bank, end to me in the water, the guy i was with laughed and sais yeh right go on then hit it, i smirked curcled round and dead on with a 4x20 scope a wacked it dead center ..............hehehe, he lost the plot hahaha.

every time i remember one theres another lol.... pigion about 10 feet directly above my, as in true verticly, i resighted half a dozen times, yu have to gues how high out of the scope to aim, i.e. as the sight goes high the pigions head has to not only go the same as the gap between your scope and gun top but the to the bore center too, all out of sight and dead venter.

i spat the matter, and dusted halfa brain of my chest, euwww...it was pink too lolol.

alll a long time ago in a world with perfick eyes...i hate glasses.

hehehe...sorry its late but, gun mags, arm chair hero's and general bollox breaths can go take a poo in the kneck region, i've suffered the trendies over the years and god dont they spout verbal diareah... ''well it said in the airgun world'' arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i've bin doing it all day infront of you! lol...

theres two ways of doing it, put in your home work, and the practice to see what you can do, and then theres let do gooders and meddling maners train yu up propa like...

here what i did fu love, not fad, every day for two years for up to 14 hours a day..i couldnt go any where with out feeling proper nakid (no gun), the gun was a hand picked from the factry and machined exactly there in every detail....

that makes a huge diference, i didnt actualy have a clue what a yard was, 'it was there'.............i was demised by airgun mags and the twits who think they now, it took three months to get the negative affect out of my head and get back to the real world... of what i could do lol.

its in your head guys, not as much what you put in, but what you dont let in...................................................

Nicely said Simon.....as a former Military man myself i see where your comming from.......But your FAC .177 rifle sound's awsome and i would love to see some footage of ya hitting Paper targets at range

Cheers Steve mate.

Aye it's a beauty of a TX200HC .177 in a dedicated Left-Hand action with a walnut stock and shoots a dream on AA Diablo Field 4.51mm pellets and nothing else. It was tuned about 10 years ago by Karl Slater at Guns International (retired and sold-up now alas!), and he really knew how to hone and tune a spring rifle if you have the FAC. I don't have a digi vid camera or a mobile phone even; I would like to show some film of what I can do to group pellet on pellet at a 45 metre paper zeroing target. Correct hold-technique is very important with a high performance spring rifle. Alas I can never shoot competitively with it, as it would be disqualified in a flash and it's too bloody good to down-tune and return it to the 12ft/lb limit. It shoots beautifully flat and a missed shot is entirely my fault.

I now have six air rifles, all of them spring rifles and I would never part with one of them for quadruple the money I paid for them. They are the top of the crop, no ifs or buts. I must get my daughter to take pics of my rifles and scopes for all to see here. She's the one with the I.T. brains around here.

What was your Unit by the way?

Cheers mate

bugger it, in for a penny in for a pound..

ok, in your lifes on a daily basis, whats the thing you can do most fluently, properly to perfection too.. your jobs? you do them 8 hours a day day in day out..so yup more than likely you can do something that sort of gives you a buzz that your good at this bit.

think closer to home.... you put food in mouth on the end of a prong no less? how often do you miss or stab something? probly not in years.

even closer to home....you wipe yu bums yes... not only do you hit that 'O' ring every time (bar boozed up lol even then i doubt you miss much lol), ok it gets worse, not only do you wipe blind and through paper (i hope paper...) but you wipe with a presision a machine with a huge computer couldnt do, several complex smooth movents utalising how many mustles, tendons and ligaments? all up your rist, your arm..4 fingers and a thum, your kneck, shoulder..back?? etc etc.. trust me its a complex manuver.

the point is its 'flued', (your movement not the results hehehe), yup smooth as a top martial artist....bet it doesnt take long eather per wipe, what, 1/5 of a second from top to bottom, or tuther way round, then you chuck it,(and get it in?), gather more...and do it again, you'll be suprised to know theres probly a hundred diferent types of wipe, all of which you know so well you dont even think anything about, even foo barred on 15 pints of stella loopy juice... now thats a smooth move if ever i heard of one! hehehe..

nar then nar then...shooting, its all the same, only its the oposite, you dont move, but you 'hold still' in poise thats not actualy a 'stopped there' if you do stop dead, the second you move every bod and his dog notises you, so its a finite diference on par with a good old bum wipe..you dont even know 'how your doing it'.

problem is, everything in your head from birth sais freeze, or go... it's not till you get it into your mind that you start to poise there, in a shot what is there? you stand still and one finger moves ooooo about 1/2 inch on a really bad trigger, but....some how, you pull off line. (same but smaller than the new driver who looks over their shoulder and turns the wheel with out thinking, because the kneck pulled the arm that way...).

so its a 'relaxed' 'grip', a contradiction in terms maybe, but you do it every time you hit a nail with a hamer, or apply that extra wong on a spanner....if you gripped solid the hammer would shock your hand so you 'loose grip' it tightly.

as to staying still it makes no odds weather your standing sitting or prone, you still have acheive that grip, and let your body get cumfy with it, most of all you have to relax mentaly with your body..takes time dunt it. (as one, the basic low life manager type does all they can to disrupt that one ness...makes you move and do it just before your brain can say fu.k off.)

dont confuse this with getting in control, thats another isue involving hypnosis and a lot of self training to the point you cant breath unles you say it to youreslf..a little exsisive lol, yu get uptight and too tense to think when your hyped up and having to 'control' all that energy, its boosting your body to 'go' and you want to pause there ...

(if any of you have done martial arts or a sport similar you'll know the diference between trying to move at all let alone fast whilest tensed up hard, and having that fluidity that lets you move like lightning...because its not tensed full....'flow'.).

the breathing issue...in out in out...up down up down goes the cross hair so you hold yu breath, two bad things here, one is you stiffened mustles and stuff all around yu mid drift which affected every other part your body, second is your sufacting lol..seriously...try 5-10 shots rapid, yuoll be short of breth, that then stresses the body releasing hormaons, lactic acid, all affecting the how the minds doing...yu can get in a worse state than the stella lol.

when you suss it, there is no breath in there, no stopped breathing, a smooth fluid movement into a poise of a stationary motion where you subcontously touch the trigger and target all in one endless moment of nothing but the sight to shot instant, you then 'continue' the move with the follow through (still looking dead on target, body still on target..stance still there) then fluedly move onto what ever your doing next... to get that right you need to know what next, even more than that, like wiping yu butt you need to know fluently and without thinking. (thats the 'timeing' )

hows all that done? two ways to it....do it long enough to let yourself acheive it, or fighting against yourself stropping about this, moaning about that, clogging up your mind with shite...getting tense and then letting it all go in your head?(pritty much getting yourself before the dick heads can, or..doing it for them?)

way two sucks big time...it teach's you to fail. becomes the conditioned responce to that subcontous auto pilot..gun, shit pellet in..and miss it...moan... its a way bad starting point.

allowing yourself you'll adjust to the situation and improve nicely.(you'll like it..)

a few shots a day with hundred percent 'mean it' or intent are way better than 300 shots just let loose to get the pellets gone, followed by the brag of how many. 10..maybe 20 a day but clear minded will improve you faster better, it also teach's the brain to hit it as the narmal in time.

finaly, part of that zen thing lol...or just that 'oneness' thing is true to yourself. (but it isnt admiting your crap, or giving up or braging yu good....again its a thing between you and you no less, even if your crap if your doing it right you'll at least enjoy it, and more often than not you'll improve..raiting it to others is questioning yourself..so sort of arguing your own head against it. Needing others 'aproval' to be aloud to hit it...shit yu lost afore yu started. YOU CAN!).

good shooting peeps..have fun.

Wow!!

That is without a doubt the most abstract and detailed description of, relax, know your shot, be aware of your own and your gear's limits, if in any doubt don't do it, that I've ever heard......

Quality post, mate. Respect...

Cheers

Mine was a lucky one, we were clearing a warehouse of feral pigeon and they were dropping out from a hole in the cieling, external access blocked up and making a mess on the stock below.

We set up a feeding station and they soon got used to using it, but crack off a shot and back up the hole the others went.

I saw two heads peeping out for the all clear and waited for them both to drop out and start to feed.

Crosshairs following one on the dip, squeezed off the shot and bagged the two with one pellet.

The cleaner was still working in the offices and confirmed she only heard on shot, but two pigeons.

Chuffed to bits! Never happen again.

:notworthy: all the stories on here are amazing, ive not had anything as good as most the stories on here but i'll put my most momorable kill down....

me and my friend were out lamping for rabbit on our local permission, we were 3-4 minutes in and still walking towards our hide when out of nowhere a rabbit run's across our ark of fire about 7 foot in front of us. it ran from a bush and was moving along a small patch of open gound (about 2 meters wide)heading for another bush.

i had a split second to react, and without even having the time to aim i decided that i was confident i could hit the target whilst firning a shot from the hip.

i hit the rabbit in the heart and it did a rowly powly, instant kill! was chuffed to bits, that night i ended up bagging another rabbit too

best shot for me would have to be with my falcon fn 19 was out shooting squirells with a mate and a hare jumped up around 20 yard in front of us and took off full pelt through the wood as i followed its path with the gun pulled the trigger and dropped it, we couldnt believe it. it made 50yard from where i shot it, even better it was a head shot.

doubt anyone would believe me and i wouldnt expect anyone to either, i wouldnt believe it if i never saw it. but i know i will prob never pull a shot off like it again.

a memerable ratting night on NV goggles.

i'd been targeting some pens, 2 lot seperated for aout three months, gone from full white lights to lamps dim lights reds blues greens you name it, even litle 1.5v dwindly pocket torch's strung up at strategic places, then onto NV goggles, shit they were everywhere, all they were doing was dancing just out of the beams, literaly you move to the left they went to the left, so...on went the barrel mounted laser, zero was a doddle once i'd sussed the distance, turn up, strap it on with the new hi tecky barrel mount....one thick post office rubber band...as yu do....set it on the rret and get gogged up with the 1.5 Kg headset..

the proces is simple enough, silently walk side ways up and down the pens peeping in each till the eyes light up the laser on and pop a head from the hip. this was a 18-20 odd rats a night just like the early lamping days, after a while they got used to the laser, the sexond the spot apeared they screemed the tantrum and legged it next door, so i sussed a new method, shoo them next door where all of a sudden they thought they were safe and didnt bother about the red laszer dot... yeh i know a bit weird bit who cares worked a treet lol.

well...couple weeks on, this one rat started to run next door then stopped dead in tracks, like they do when they really want another nibble on the food pile, only this ones looking in mid air, hesatateing and going to run, going to turn back? hmmm... so i hold the lazer still there, wandering what its doing, then it stumbles on back and reach's in the air and tries to grab a hold of the lazer beam lmao..not the spot! the actual beam in the air ....red hand no red hand, after 2 or 3 grabs i lift the lazer on the bonse and pop goes another head.
