valerio 32 Posted January 15, 2007 Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 Mute and hard dogs dogs are no good for badger hunting,they will be badly injured or killed.The best dog for badger is a good bayer who can bottle his quarry without too much contact.In my experience and from what I've learned from older hunters 10 or less out of 100 foxing dogs will make the grade on badger.A good badger dog needs nose,voice,courage and most of all intelligence.I have seen stupidly hard dogs owned by stupid hunters coming out of a den without their jaws or without half shoulder Quote Link to post

Guest Eamon.Mc Posted January 15, 2007 Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 In my opinion the best dog for badger when it was legal would have been able to find anywhere , bottle up the quarry stay within inches of him , attack if he tried to bolt or dig on therefore keeping him in the one place until you broke through and then lock on , only my opinion. toothless 1 Posted January 15, 2007 Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 I'm only 20 so obviously i haven't ever hunted badger but i have a question. do the terrier men who were around when badger digging was legal think that all the dogs that were regarded as "hard" on foxes faired so well on badger? Do you think there was a difference in styles between the two quarry? Obviously the locator played a big part in the change in dogs used for digging. i only ask this because i was speaking to an old poacher the other day and he is of the opion that alot of good fox dogs nowadays would take a pasting off a badger. i dont wont to start and arrgument on wether you should or shouldnt hunt badger i just want to no peoples opions on the subject :thumbs-up: how could a locatorchange generation upon generation of dogs bred to work????????????? answer!: it cant,,, Quote Link to post

Kane 2 Posted January 16, 2007 Report Share Posted January 16, 2007 Hard dogs useless LOL Ive been told by an old boy if you didnt have reasonably hard dogs you would loose to much quarry through them either digging away or through giving the run around or giving ground to easily when the quarry charged.Just his opinion. He also said the best gamest hardest terriers are not as stupid as some people say and that a decent terrier will adjust his style depending on what situation hes put in.He believes that in the past a lot of promising badger dogs were ruined by pricks not willing or able to dig to the dog forcing the dog to quit.His words.
