I'm only 20 so obviously i haven't ever hunted badger but i have a question.

do the terrier men who were around when badger digging was legal think that all the dogs that were regarded as "hard" on foxes faired so well on badger? Do you think there was a difference in styles between the two quarry? Obviously the locator played a big part in the change in dogs used for digging.

i only ask this because i was speaking to an old poacher the other day and he is of the opion that alot of good fox dogs nowadays would take a pasting off a badger.

i dont wont to start and arrgument on wether you should or shouldnt hunt badger i just want to no peoples opions on the subject :thumbs-up:

i have been told that a hard fox dog will approch the job of holding a brock the same way so s a result will most definately get smashed up and i wouldn't be surprised if the dog ends up comming off as it is only used to going in and hamering a fox.

i've been told by an old terrier man that hard dogs on brock if they didn't learn sense would either walk or only be good for a few digs a season cos of time off healing up. only sounders had long working lives on them lads.

Some of the digging lads from europe should be able to help with this one, it's still legal over there in certain parts and certain month's, I think their dogs do it all, fox, coypu and badger. The differance is their dogs will take a fox apart at the seams but just hold a badger up until you dig it out. I guess they just learn differant techniques for each quarry???

it s legal in some europe countries, not in mine but i know few lads which do the job, the technique depands on the size of badger, really good welsh, teckel but most common jgt can do the badger by him self, badger which size is up to 13kg, on bigger one y can use only sharp sounder, or two cooperating dogs, creatures which are more than 18kg, y can just wait and shoot it on the surface. problem is that most of them are really deep even more than 5m, and can digg faster than 2 men with shovel. when friends do some digging, they use heavy machines to help dog as soon as possible.

old lads here have the dogs on badgers and other on foxes, they were sayin that y can ruin the good badger dog by using him on fox. badger dog have too known that his opponent is far more stronger than him, the dog have to be close to badger so he can t him burried, the dog have to try to hold the badger on one place, by attackin, barking, never grabin and holding, badger can bite off a jaw, can kill the dog by his big claws, if the dog grab the badger s back it can turn under his own body and bit the dog to his neck.

so the dogs use totally different techniques like one fox. from what i heard it s really hard to raise up a good badger dog, y lose a lot of dogs until y find the one.

may be i find some pics from the job, i ve couple friend in austria which do the job, it s legal there, they use except teckels, jgt, welsh also jrt.

was told by an oldtimer, they used to enter their young dogs on old brock for a sesson or two ,even before they'ed see charlie.he said it would teach the young uns to stand and bay rather than just mix it with brock, for he was a formidable opponent.and when they would work fox, rather than kill it to ground nine times out of ten charlie would bolt rather than be dug to!not a bad thing considerating they had no locaters back then :drink:

first post on this forum, although i watch it with interest regularly.

i worked terriers seriously through the 80's and early 90's, in England, Wales and Ireland.

my last serious digging dog was put to rest 5 years ago aged 14.

this topic has compeled me to reply..

the coment about 'old terriers' and 'bold terriers' is as close to the truth as you will get, and 'horses for courses' also covers this.

i have dug to dogs that could kill foxes in unbelievably short times, without sustaining more than 2 or 3 pepper marks. these dogs could account for 30-40 foxes per season.

the same dogs have been wrecked on 1 dig.

i have seen small 10lb russells in Ireland work day-in, day-out without any injury at all...

a good fox dog is a good dog..

as i say , i've been out of the game for a good few years now. i have some great memories and made a lot of good friends across the country and i salute all you boys who are still at it against the odds..

the working terrier, regardless of its type, is the greatest of all dogs...

again, i salute all you's boys still digging, good luck.

i had a black dog nuttall x park bred that would bay about two foot away on a fox but on anything else he would go jaw to jaw with what a nutter i could only work him once a month due to his cuts

had dogs that do both but after a season or two at the stronger qaurry ,would not rush into the fox the same , unless could get at the throat etc ,i think a dog has to learn how to cope with strong qaurry diffrently , pre ban etc
