Guest stewie
well went out with my mate raff again today for a general mooch about with the dogs along the river trent and around some lakes that holds no end of wild ducks and geese!! im very tempted to apply for a shotgun licence as im pretty sure i could get shooting permission round here im allowed on with the dogs so dont see why not with a gun. we didnt actually see alot but the two terriers and my bull cross where very busy in the cover but its the same each time we go out its getting pretty obvious we need more dogs for working the cover, which is something i hope to address in the summer months for next season, as the cover is thick and wide so the quarry is just giving the little dogs the run around :wallbash: still it was nice, as always, just to be out and about and there were little "hints" and "smells" here and there that a night out on here soon could be rewarding!!! first we got to the lake and worked down the tracks that we could get down this is where the thickest cover is and like i said the dogs in the cover found but just cant keep enough pressure on them to bolt. this is my bull cross bitch in some of the cover that was light compared to the rest look at all these wild ducks theres a mixture of mallard and teal here and this is one of the egrets that has taken up residence in the area!! i used to spend hours searching for these birds while out to no avail but raff must be my lucky charm as we see one nearly everytime he is out with me on here lol not the clearest picture but you can make it out then we walked down the trent and seen a few birds. i love the trent i spent hours down this river when i was growing and its looking alot cleaner after the pollution f**k up a few years ago on this stretch that killed alot of fish but its been restocked now and the birds are back in good numbers but unfortunately its resulted in these getting there numbers up to must of seen at least 50 today  then these geese got spooked by the dogs and would of been some good shooting, the flock flew straight over our heads by now dusk was falling so we set off for home across the farm to the sound of hundreds of rooks that were noisily returning to roost for the night in the main wood and watching the flocks of pigeons that where coming in various groups and swooping down to get settled for the night in the different copses that are scattered over the land. the dogs chased a few rabbits that were venturing out of there warrens for an early feed but none were far enough out to catch but we were treated to a cracking sunset which is easily my favourite part of the day all in all it was a good day even tho we didnt catch all the dogs still enjoyed it and the pups learnt a little bit more about fieldcraft which is always good!!! heres some of the dogs at various parts of the day a good pack photo just as we were leaving the farm happy hunting to you all and remember it dont matter how much you catch, how good your dogs are or what anyone else thinks of them all that matters is that your out there enjoying yourself and your dogs FACT thanks for reading   2 Quote Link to post
