basic starting tips please lads

Hi Ginger,

First of all on the hutch, any sort of rabbit hutch will be fine fella. Just be mindful of the mesh you may want to change it to a strong mesh as ferets can be escape artists. Personally i prefer the double hutches with a run under the sleeping quarters.

Also, you may consider a small shed or an aviary to give them a little bit more room.

In terms of equipment:

With the nets, hemp or spun nylon are very good but around £3 a net.

I personally use 10z nylon ones from a bloke on here called longnetter he only charges £1 per net. Drop him a pm.

With the ferrets, I work 2 or sometimes 4 at once! So with your good worker use the other one if you can. Please don't use it with out a collar though mate, if it kills down the hole you could be waiting for a long time for it to come out. Maybe ask dad for another one mate.

Also mate just enjoy your time and don't worry about numbers.

In terms of kit this is what I carry:

Large bag with around 60 purse nets

Securters

Machete

Spade

Ferret finder and collars

A small trowel.

The little plastic trowel is great for incase you have to dig your ferret out, once you get within 1 foot switch to the trowel so you don't catch your ferret with the spade.

Always wear long sleeves and gloves aswell buddy to save your arms and clear undergrowth. You should be able to get gardening gloves from a local hard wear or garden shop for about £1 per pair.

Best of luck and most of all enjoy it,

With food you will get a whole host of replies.

Mine are fed on Rabbit, pigeon plus other vermin i shoot, squirrels, jays etc.

I also occasionally feed a dedicated ferret biscuit ( Alpha ferret feast)

Also, if i have none of the above i will feed cat meat as a last resort.

Off cuts from meat dinners are always saved, chicken carcasses etc all good food.
