what the hell have they sealed these primers with

Ive brougth some old russian 223 off a chap as it was cheap (£7 for 20) anyways they are zinc plated steel cases.

 

thought i would attempt to see how they reload, put one into the press, bit of force poped the primer out (although the primer pocket has 3 holes not the usual 1) put the 2nd case in and bank, de-priming pin snaped.

 

are you meant to soak these cases to disolve the sealant or something, or is it just unlucky that it snaped at that point?

 

these cases were lubed btw.

Hi Mate. Not 100% sure but i dont think the three hole primer type are reloadable

Sounds to me like they are BURDAN primers not the usual BOXER, If this is the case youll need an hydrolic decaper, easy to make and work well. There use to one on the market called a Wamadet i think i used to use one to decap millitary 9mm ( the old 2Z ) as for the sealer , take a close look they may have a ring crimp to seal if so not a prob just run a sharp knife around the inner edge that will remove the crimp. PS, You can reload BURDAN cases but you may have problems with primers ,,,, they are not the same sizes as the normal BOXER,,, only one i know of that may fit is the BURDAN No 69 its the same diameter as BOXER small pistol/rifle, ,,,,,,,,,, but "CHECK" check hight of primer to they do differ

ahaaaa so i have just found, small primers too small, large too large.

 

oh well ill use them for plinking them chuck the empties afterwards, no great loss.

Best way mate the only Millitary cases i ever did any good with were the 9mm and the 303 the rest were just too much trouble

Your standard de-capping dies will not work and simply result in a snapped pin. The type of primer pocket is called a "Berdan" named after the inventor Hiram Berdan. There are tools available to remove the primers and to cut a center hole but it's normally far to much effort, hence the general cost of "Berdan" cases is equal to the scrap value at the time of sale.
