Logun, I understand what you're saying and agree that makes sense, and we do sometimes do it that way if we're sure the tunnel really is a "dead end" extender run. But most of the time I can't tell if a run ends or not, so I set two just to be sure.

best to be sure and safe

Ok so you arrive at job park up find land owner have cuppa, walk to the area, probe for run, dig in, slip in trapline "which for those who have not used them takes 2 seconds" why not slip another in. I catch moles for cash not for fun so want to make sure I have as many chances as possible to clear them out. you wouldn't saw the claws of one side of your talpex so why only set one trapline. Which by the way are in my opinion are the best traps available.

have to agree with you there they are the best avaliable :thumbs:

the tunnel trap is the best trap that anyone can own.they tried and tested for years.i use them all the time .

they have got they negative points tho.they freeze up.and that the only thing i can think that may hider them at times of cold weather.the albano type dont freze up.the trap line ones got they uses but as for a out and out mole catching trap you want go far wrong with a tunnel.cost is a factor to concider.you get four good tunnels for the price of a trap line, and if you set the trap line back to back as the inventor says you should that cost a fair bit.two traps in one set of mole workings should do the job.£5 for tunnels or ££50 for the trap lines.?.if i had to buy them i would go for the tunnels each time.

i make the trap line ones at maybe 80% less than i could buy them for ,but the tunnel traps will always be my main traps

Those are not accurate prices for our traps. Yes our traps do wind up being kind of pricey by the time we make them here in California with expensive labor, then add shipping, import duties, and retail markup. But they aren't remotely close to L50 for a pair of traps. Not even close, and I just wanted to correct that.

steve what i said is that in most mole sets you would put two traps in.ie duffer type.so the two traps becomes four traps if you set them back to back as you say they should be set.so steve tell me then what cost would someone have to pay to get four of your traps here in the uk just for one basic set at a mole.im sure its near the £50 mark steve.

steve how the hel can you say they expencive to make when i can make the same for £2 a trap.i get my springs by the 100 at. the time.if i got 2ooo they would cost £o.95 each.hope before long there will be a new trap made in the uk for the mole trapers that cost a lot less than yours.they well over priced steve.aint having a go at you or your traps just think they so over priced for what they are.

Logun, the biggest cost by far of producing traps is labor, not materials. Anyway, I have no interest at all in getting into an argument with you or anyone else on a professional forum. Several trappers here have said they find our traps to be effective and are using them, others may find them too expensive compared to other traps that are available, and may choose not to buy them. To each his own.

Duffus types are the best IMO by far in terms of cost and efficiency... the talpex style are also good, but more expensive... Can't see the need for anything else in 90% of cases, fair enough these trapline jobs if the ground is frozen... But other than that, stick to the proven methods..

Logun you offered my your traps at a fiver each which is not much less than I can buy traplines for plus I don't have to pay postage on traplines and I get as the supplier is just down the road. I will be ordering some more next week as all mine are out at the moment and I have a bit of a waiting list.

I always carry duffus, scissor and talpex in my van in large numbers and depending on the terrain i choose accordingly. I personally prefer duffus too (flatpack) but there is a place for scissor and talpex and i couldnt be without either. I have a handful of trapline too, they are very handy in certain situations and pack a hell of a punch for such a small trap!

Hello to the mole catchers. I only recently discovered these forums & Hunting Life. Lots of interesting stuff posted on here.
Part of my duties as a maintenance man on a private estate is pest control and that's how I got into mole catching. I'd done plenty of rats, mice, wasps and ants etc before the mole hills started bubbling up, so I found an old Duffus in a drawer and went from there. I started doing private mole jobs last year - all gardens so far - and have started generating a useful 2nd income out of it. Just beer money at the moment but more than enough for a few pints. I like the work and am fascinated by all the different traps and their suitability to different situations. I use a lot of Traplines and I'd be interested to have other opinions on them - the good, the bad and the ugly if you like. Although I carry Duffus and Talpex, I've gotten into the bad habit of defaulting to tlines which has revealed that certain moles won't have anything to do with them - they seem to just chuck 'em out the way. They also often fire without catching. Not on every job, but often enough to remind me that there is always another tool for the job. I really like the Trapline, and I'm working on refining my setting technique constantly. Just wondered what other mole men's experiences with them were. And to say hello.

      Just out of interest......

Which trap do you reach for first? You can explain why if you choose.

For me, it's the Duffus every time, although I can see the attraction of the Talpex type traps.
