lampingking 3
recently i have been shooting alot of wood pigeons, now it is costing me a fortune in cartriges (£70 per 250 32gram 6's), i was looking at clay pigeon cartridges in the gun shop and they are a lot cheaper, do you think that clay cartriges would be ok for shooting woodies and a few crows. would they kill them , if so what gram and number, thanks lk Quote Link to post

stubby 175
christ, thats expensive, I use kent velocity at £45 a slab (250) Quote Link to post
weejohn 3
Yes they will but crows need a bit more stopping so shoot them closer. I use danarms 7.5s @ £37/ 250 and work excellent on ferals that i have been shooting. Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
They put in a hardener in the lead for clay cartridges so the pellets won't distort as much on firing so gives a better pattern but they don't transfer the energy as effectively as gameloads with their softer lead so you could end up with more pricked birds as the pellets pass straight through. I guess smaller shot size would give you a thicker pattern and more chance of hitting a vital organ, but probably best just to find a cheaper cartridge or dealer. Quote Link to post
lksopener 105
Clay shells are fine. Some of my best bags of over a 100 birds have been with 28 gram 7.5 intercomp x. Quote Link to post
theinvisiblescarecrow 0
Ok to use, done it myself when I went clay shooting, I don't now though. Nowadays I stick to 6 for Pigeon & If I know a crow or two is possible I'll take some 5's. I still have a few 7's & 7.5's lay about somewhere, I save them for harvest time when close birds are more likely. Quote Link to post
nasher1 258
Thats a bit steep I think you could knock £15-£20 off a slab and still get no.6s if you shop around Quote Link to post
HunterBoyTellEm 0
Kent Velocitys 6's 32gm, Cheshire Gun Room near me are about £46 per 250. Not bad for the money ive had quite a lot of the past few months haha Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
mmngh, I know there's a lot of people using clay carts on pigoens and I know they work, but IMO for what it's worth, I thing you should be thinking a bit bigger 6s is what I use for everything, try Eley HB pigeon I think they're called quite cheap last time I looked, 30gm 6.5 shot, good dense pattern plus a well built cartridge (coming from eley).... masmiffy 82
No such thing as cheap cartridges anymore and now bloody VAT has gone up as well! We are getting well ripped off on anything made with lead!! Have been using 28g 7.5 on pigeon a lot and when decoying these are superb!! Look for 'bin ends' at a clay ground sometimes there are bargains to be had! Quote Link to post
