shooting pigeons with clay cartridges ?

Recommended Posts

recently i have been shooting alot of wood pigeons, now it is costing me a fortune in cartriges (£70 per 250 32gram 6's), i was looking at clay pigeon cartridges in the gun shop and they are a lot cheaper, do you think that clay cartriges would be ok for shooting woodies and a few crows. would they kill them , if so what gram and number, thanks lk

Mate theres no reason why not! i have shoot loads of pigeons with 7.5's  if it can dust a clay at 40yds+ then it will knock the wind out of a bird! and the gravity should do the rest

They put in a hardener in the lead for clay cartridges so the pellets won't distort as much on firing so gives a better pattern but they don't transfer the energy as effectively as gameloads with their softer lead so you could end up with more pricked birds as the pellets pass straight through. I guess smaller shot size would give you a thicker pattern and more chance of hitting a vital organ, but probably best just to find a cheaper cartridge or dealer.

mmngh, I know there's a lot of people using clay carts on pigoens and I know they work, but IMO for what it's worth, I thing you should be thinking a bit bigger 6s is what I use for everything, try Eley HB pigeon I think they're called quite cheap last time I looked, 30gm 6.5 shot, good dense pattern plus a well built cartridge (coming from eley)....

No such thing as cheap cartridges anymore and now bloody VAT has gone up as well!

We are getting well ripped off on anything made with lead!!

Have been using 28g 7.5 on pigeon a lot and when decoying these are superb!!

Look for 'bin ends' at a clay ground sometimes there are bargains to be had!
