Greyhound racing

Recommended Posts

I've only been to the dogs once but loved it and will one day have one to train and bring on but don't know much about the racing side of it!

Is there anyone in the surrey area who goes to local tracks who would mind me tagging along to see what its all about and how to do it?

or what would be the best way of learning where how and what??

DickyBoy; I don't know how old ye are or what ye situation is mate. But I'd strongly suggest ye get ye body along to the nearest Greyhound Kennels (They're not Always attatched to a Track) and pester the crap out of the Trainers there till one of them lets ye volanteer ye week end labour.

Not much point in going after a paid job. The back pocket money handed to a part time Kennel Boy is hardly worth the trouble of insisting on, believe me!

Get in there and be prepared to spend ye time picking up Dog shit. Raking out kennels. Fetching and carrying. Putting down, taking up and washing bowls. Walking six greyhounds at a time in endless circles. Grooming Greyhounds. Picking up More Dog shit. Ye'll probably get shouted at quite a bit too. And, if ye Ever give the wrong bowl of feed to the wrong Dog? Consider a new career mate, because you'll be down the f*cking road faster than the best damn Grey'!

Up side is that ye'll be around a real, live Greyhound Trainer and his more experianced Kennel Boys. That's where to learn the begginings of ye trade :good:

Oh; And look out - if ye haven't already got it - a book by a gentleman by the name of George Curtis. " Greyhound Training ", I believe it's called? That's said to be a fair read for people such as yeself.

Good luck ;)

very good advice, its exactly what i did for a couple of years (my family had dogs with this trainer so it was pretty easy gettin sum part time voluntary work).

Yeh theres the shit shuvling and the god awful stench of urine but i found it a real honour to get to know each dogs personality and just admire them for the amazing breed that they are (i am a big lover of the greyhound). Often as well each trainer has little tricks of the trade, medical knowledge and feeding and health tips. If running dogs is your passion then you could do alot worse than work at a kennels voluntarily.

did all that sort of thing for a gamekeeper and now most evenings and weekends are taken up with that......shit shovelling scrubbing feeders etc so don't have time for all that at the moment but thank you for the advice DS, i was kinda hoping there would be a member that owned a couple of dogs that took them along for trials etc and start that way??
