Billybob 1
hi all, just looking for oppinions, ive been invited beating to a local shoot, im also thinking of getting a beddy x whippet for rabbiting alongside my white lakie and ferrets, i just wondred if trained like a gun dog, could it come beating or even act as a retreaver or rough shooting dog Now then Pal I've never seen anyone beating with Beddy x whippets, although I have heard of a chap who uses 2 for beating and other purposes. I take it you would use the little lurcher for lamping rabbits as well as ferreting ? If not I would look at a different breed for beating. Just an opinion, I have 2 terriers, 1 used for everything except earth work as he's too big and the other just rats and earth/bale work. I have an old retired lurcher who used to mainly lamp although she was a very good ferreting dog, but now she just stinks! I also have a young lab who is coming on a treat. For me I would get a gun dog for beating. Quote Link to post
nasher1 258
I know a chap who has a first cross beddy whippet and its used for picking up and roughshooting and its a brilliant little dog, so good infact I've just bought one to train up myself, obiously they are not all going to make the grade but then not all purpose bred gundogs do either, its a bit of a gamble but what the hell give it a go atb nasher Quote Link to post

Id get a spaniel if I was the OP Yes but as he says in his original post he wants it to work alongside his lakey and ferrets on rabbits, if was purely for shooting I would go for a gundog but for what he wants it for I would go with the beddy/whippet but each to thier own atb nasher Quote Link to post

clayflint 31
I keep and work spaniels picking up and beating I also keep a beddy cross lurcher that I work alongside them he's got an amazing nose but can sometimes get funny looks from some guns. Quote Link to post
doddsy1970 9
hi all, just looking for oppinions, ive been invited beating to a local shoot, im also thinking of getting a beddy x whippet for rabbiting alongside my white lakie and ferrets, i just wondred if trained like a gun dog, could it come beating or even act as a retreaver or rough shooting dog I used to take my lurcher beating but stopped because she would get on a scent or see a fox and that would be it. She was good when a fox got clipped but it made working my spaniels properly next to impossible. Now she only goes ferreting, ratting and lamping with us and i pick up and beat with my spaniels. But my father in law has one of her pups and he is brilliant. He retrieves flushes and bushes as well if not better than some 'classic' working breeds (although not as good as my spaniels) . If it is trained right there should be no reason why you could not take it beating. Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
theres a bloke at the beat i go, with beddy whippet but cant let off lead will nail anything but bloke not got control of it. i use my collie whippet for beating aswel as rabbits, hopefully start picking up with her next year. shes been around chickens from pup so still wont grabbed pegged bird but if went every week think she would proper good. took her last week shes starting to naturally give a point then i send her in bush and she flushes, got few weird looks but she not put foot wrong yet even when the proper gun dogs do. just got be on look out for bambi because when out mooching shes gets involved in tracking wounded bambi. but 6 ran at and past us last week and as soon as i say leave she stands there watching them. i am sure beddy whippets do ok but some can be head strong and probaly not as easy to train. sure beddy will give them good nose, but my seen my bitch flush two birds a good springer walked past. Beechessam 0
I used to run a 2nd cross beddy whippet in the beating line on a prestigious pheasant shoot. She was excellent in the line, would find and flush and watch them away. She would take rabbits and hares though this did cause problems if they went forward. Quote Link to post
