DogMagic 461
Just a step by step piccy story of the new ferret cage i just finished building. The hole in pic 4 is the access to and from upstairs. Pic 7 shows the nest box entrance. 8 is the finished thing. I painted it in black bituminous paint to keep it weather proofed and varnished inside for same reason. The last pic is one of the happy residents. The cage is 4x2x2 ft. 3.bmp Quote Link to post

zaktarin 1
Looks good. Self-builds are always better - customised and all that. How/what is the roof? Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
Cheers mart, that sounds good. I bet they love that! Zac the roof WAS going to be another sheet of 4x2 ply but when i put it on top it didnt quite reach so i went and bought a sheet of 6x2, painted it with the black bituminous stuff then painted the sheet of 4x2 as well and bolted the two together so the 4x2 overhangs the front of the cage by 6 inches. chilly 59
look good mate they seem happy in there, your wood work looks much better than mine lol. what kind of mesh u use mate and how big is the nest box for how many ferrets? these were the things i was unsure about when i did mine Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
Cheers chilly. I started off by screwing the back legs to the back panal. Then i screwed the front legs to the side panals then the side panals to the back legs. After that i just muddled through really adding the 2nd floor then the ground floor, nest box panal etc till it was done. The nest box is 1 ft wide by 2 tall and 2 deep. There is 3 ferrets in there at the moment but come the summer the hob will be moving out and it will be the 2 jills plus their youngsters. Without looking i think the mesh is 1 inch square, heavy duty mesh. Quote Link to post
chilly 59
think the mesh i used is a little light weight may change it when i get more to build a run for them, my nest box is about 14 inch square and only 2 ferrets so should be ok, do you think it would be ok if i had any more in there ?, think it deff better to build your own tho isnt it, Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Self builds are better, they look better than the tanning booth coloured objects you see on the net Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,143
nice job mate, it's more satisfying to build your own I reckon Quote Link to post
web22 27
self builds are defo better, you get the satisfaction of making something and all to the sizes you require, and at a sniff of the price,i made my own some time ago still looks like new and is more solid than my mate's which is smaller and cost a fortune.the treatment you chose should last forever so will get many years of happy ferrets through the doors.
