increasing population

Recommended Posts

hi all, on few bits of permission, there are small numbers of wild phesant, wood cock, partridge, but i would like to increase the population for next season, so theres more game to shoot, does any one have any tips

To be perfectly honest you dont really want to shoot the game birds for at least a couple of seasons and in the mean time feed, feed, feed. All through the year. You also need to be religious with your vermin trapping. This is probably the most important part of keeping and protecting a wild stock. You need to identify the areas the wild birds (pheasants and partrdige mainly) are concentrated and create feed rides for them. When the weather starts getting wet and cold, then you start putting straw down. When that straw is wet and dirty, then you put more down because no one like to eat off of a dirty wet table and so on. If all goes well in a couple of years you will have a bit of ground that will sustain a good wild stock. The one thing you must remember is to only take a little each year and every other year if all is well you can take a bit more. I hope this helps..... As for books there are a few out there. Go to your local library im sure they will have some.

I would suggest all of the above are good tips.

The only thing different for me would be to allow the guys to shoot cocks only to start with .

A, It keeps the interest up and at least you have something to go for.

B, It allows the hens to establish themselves for the future .

The more work you put into the ground, the more satisfaction you will get out of the ground.

Good luck

Just one thing to add - look at establishing some type of cover crop - some areas of rough cover thats fenced in a bit and stick a couple of feeders in the middle of this. Also when you ay wild do you mean that there is someone putting birds down local and they are wandering onto your permission and establishing themselves or is there an established breeding population?
